On grass and grain farms raising turkeys oaunut help beunt profitable, for they have plenty of ground to stroll over, and there is but little they can injure, while they help materially in keeping down count less numbers of injurious insects. Un a fruit farm, where grapes, strawberries etc., are grown, turkeys, ducks, geese and chickens are all destructive to iruit, unless kept within prescribed limits. Many a farmer’s wife, and daughteis, too. know that most of their pocket money depends on rearing a large fiook of turkeys, and there are many others who rear a flock each year. In commen cing, get a pair or trio of the best, irre spective of breed, though the bronze breed seems to be the leading and most popular one, a d deseivedly so, for they are hardy, grow large size, and invaria bly command paying prices. Wheat, flour and biead have—so it is stated—t een "canned” in th s fashion for 7 months, and have been found to be in excellent condition at the end of that period. Taking into consideration the security of the grain, when time sealed in a par tial vacuum, against the attacks of in sects, hirge vermin, tire, dampness, fer ine tation, and other dangers, something migtit be said perhaps in favor of the plan here briefly alluded to. Doubtless, however, veiy strong evidence of its efficacy against damp and fermentation would be required before the tinning of grain could really become largely adop ted. As regards the other risks men tioned, they do seem to be tolerably provided against. Some Western breeders stato that it is a mistake to suppose that the cross oi the Cota wold and Merino to be an im provement on the originals. The wool is neither the best tor combing, nor can it compete in the market with that from pure Merino in fineness. The carcass is not equal to the Gotswold, and the cross is not suitable in other respects, as the Cot-wold thrives only ou good pasturage, while the Merino is an ac tive loragcr, 1 be iheep is a close gn zer, and even pieltrs short pastures. It it scrupu lously chan, though hot very select in the choice of the herbage ou which it feeds. Wool, being a highly nitroge nous sul stance, requires a larger sup ply ol albuminoid food tor sheep than other ruminants demand. Wool being ttie chiel profit ot sheep farming, it will be economy to teed oats or oil cake pretty freely to secure liberal growth ot this staple, - The water that flows orer a plowed field washes iff tbe most soluble portions of the soil, slid dep sits them in ihe bot tom of ditches. When it percolates through the soil to an underdram, tne loss is reduced to the smallest possible amou'-t. There is some loss iu under- draining watei; but t veu this is in a great part prevent'd by having a growing crop on the gruuud all the time. DOMESTIC, HUMOROUS, Darned net is coming into fashion again. It is very t ffactive as trimming for dresses or as bordering for fine cloths or cushions. It can be worked in vari ous ways with different materials, fine lace thread, colored parse silks, or with floss and filoselles either upon white, colored, or black nets. Darned net is carried to great perfection in what is known as imitation Brussels lace, and a very great variety of stitches can be formed of guipure d’art, and modern point lace stitches are taken as guides, When used as trimming to ball-dresses black net is usually selected for a foun dation, and the embroidery worked as bright-colored filoselles or floss. The designs for darning upon net are ex tremely varied, those that are suitable for embroidery in satin stitch being tbe best; but simple geometrical designs, such as a series of Vandykes, crosses, diamonds, or spots, are also used. The embroidery is done iu satin stitch or in plain darning. Trace a suitable design npou pink paper masiin, tack the aet with honeycombs in straight lines, with its wrong side uppermost upon the pa per muslin, and thread a long lace needle with the embroidery, cotton or silk. Fill m all ihe centres of tbe leaves or dowers by darning the silks in and out oi tbe honeycombs, and work spots ail over the net. Thread the needle with anothi r colored silk and double it, and darn this doable silk as an outline ail round the outer edge of tbe haves and flowers, and form the stems and sprays with it. The double thread is run in and out of the net as in plain darning. Turn and fasten off the silk on the upper side of the net, the right side of the work being underneath Un pick and turn the work and finish the edxe of the lace with a series of scallops made to buttonhole stitch. We have noticed that when rye or other gieeu manure is plowed under the soil is easily worked and tree from weeds li we examine under the Uavea ot a strong growing green crop ot any kind, we will find ihout-auds ot puny weeds that have germinated while ihe ground was uncovered and been smothered by tbd Ian growth. When a weed seed thus perishes it benefits the soil more than n can by growing larger before being plowed under. Millet is an excellent fodder plant,of which cows are exceedingly fond. It is a warm weather crop, and needs to be grown ou a light, sandy soil. Ey ma- nuung well it may be made to produce" from two to five tons of hay to the acre. A copious flow of milk is produced by cutting ihe millet, salting slightly, moistening, and spi inkling with a little meal. Early-hatched chickens are more vigorous than those produced later in the season, when hot and dry weather ai dies halt the eggs while incubation is in progress. It is more trouble to care for the very earnest chickens during cold, wet weather in March and April, but me cockerels will bring fancy prices as eaily broilers, and the pullets will be good layers next wuiter. Thebe is an advantage in growing some kinds of trees from the seed where the trees are expected to remain. The odor of flowers sometimes comes from tne petals, as, for instance, from the petals of the rose. The petals or floral leaves of the rose give out an odor long after they have been gat tiered.. This is not tbe case with most flowers. A re dent writer lias called attention to the fact that the sweeres* carnation is odoihss soon after it is cat, as ere most of the sweet flowers used in out flower work. The mignonette and heliotrope were tnpposed to be exceptions, but as these continue to open new flowers when cut and placed in water, it is prob able the odor comes only from the open ing blossoms.
