agriculture. Proper Cultivation op Currants.— Currant roots for new plantations can bo easily grown from cuttings, provid ing they be planted out in the Autumn or very early in the Spring, if properly cared for, the roots in one year will be in good condition to transplant, and will be better than old roots. As to varie ties for market, the Versailles occupies the front ranged it for home use theold Red Dutch, when well grown, is good enough, and sometimes, we think, con sidering its hardiness, productiveness and good flavor, it has few if any supe riors. It is true it is not as large as some, and therefore does not sell as well, but tor home use quality is of more importance than sizt. , but tor size under high culture it is quite respecta ble; we have grown them half an inch in diameter, lu a large plantation the bushes should be set in rows live feet apart, three and one-half feet in the rew; clean culture should always be piacticed, and besides keeping ihe cur rant worm off, the greatest care should be taken to destroy the worm that works in the stalks of the bushes. In some localities this enemy is very trou blesome; they eat out the pith of the stalks and Anally kill them. The first indication ol their presence is the chan ging of the leaves to a yellow color; a lew weeks after the whole bush dies. We do not think much of the gooseberry in the green state even lor cooking. The skin is so tough it makes very indigesti ble food; but a lipe Houghton seedling, eaten the same as a grape, by rejecting the skin, is exceedingly good eating, and when taken at just the right time is never retuscd, when once tried, even by the most fastidious. An exchange gives this good advice to owners ot horses: '‘Start your teams carefully tuni see that your men do the same, until they are fairly accustomed to the extra labor of the spring work. Watch their shoulders and necks to see that the harness is not galling them, and it would do no h*rm, but possibly much good, to wash them with salt and water, when the harness is taken off at night, especially it the animal is warm or has done any heavy pulling, bait and water is cooling and toughening and removes soreness or ii fluminution. Don’t increase their grain too suddenly, but a little eveiy day as you increase their work. Proper care at the start and reasonable watclilulue«s all of the season will keep your teams in constant working condition, Don’t wait till their necks or shonldeis are raw. or your ani mals are sick, before attending to them, lit member that pieveution is always best and clu apest. Hot Bath tor Insects.--A German method lor destroying ihrips and red spiders is to have a large vessel filled with clean hot water at a temperature of 133 degrees. The infested plants are dipped into the water for the space ot four seconds when the insects wi 1 be killed, and no damage result to the plants; it is best not to continue the im mersion longer than the time noted. If afterwards a few insects appear that have developed since the operation, it may be repeated. The temperature of the water should be watched and not allowed to fall below 122 degrees. It is said that even young ahoots and flow- e.r buds will not sutler in the least trom this treatment. DOMESTIC. Flummery. —Soald oue quart of fresh milk in a tiu pail placed in a kettle of boiling water, and add to it the grated peel of a large lemon, three tablenpoon- fuls of white sugar and four eggs beaten to a stiff froth. Stir very rapidly for five or six minutes, so that the eggs will thicken the milk, but not curdle it. Then place the pail in a pan of ioe-oold water, and stir for a few minutes and strain into a dish. Have two ounce? of gelatine soaking in a pint of cold water for half an hour, and then set it over the fire to boil, and add one teacupful of white sugar and the juice of the lem on, and boil until the gelatine is dis solved. Strain it through a jelly-strain er, and set it upon ice to cool, and then beat it with an egg-beater to a froth. Add the onstard, a little at a time—beat ing it continually—and when it is all beaten in, ponr over it a glassful of white wine and beat together rapidly. Fill two moulds which have been wet with loe-water with the flummery, and place on ioe for use the following day. It can be served with whipped cream- sauce, or eaten with preserved strawber ries or peaches. Novelties for interior decorations in houses are the damask linen curtains, which are made entirely of the purest flax, in brocaded silk designs, and are said to be very durable. They are woven in several shades of color, with an ornamental dipper centre, a pretty border down the sides and a fringe at the bottom, ic addition to which is a kind of dado, with birds, foliage and flowers, alter the Japanese fancies. Home are in white and gold, others in blue or brown and gold, in cardinal and olive, and in the rich new colors. Pineapple prepared in this way is dehuiouo witn ice-cream, or without it: Grate the pineapple, after removing every particle ol the peel, or chop it; it must be minced so fine that any oue eating it will be in doubt as to the method ot its preparation; add sufficient sugar to sweeten it; let it stew gently until it is solt. When it is prepared thus it can be eaten by many who ar ob.iged to reluse it uncooked, on occou ,it ot its producing indigestion. - — ♦ Wedding gitts whi-h gain in value after the happy occasion are those use ful articles oi linen which are sometimes found among the brie a-brac and more ornamental otienngs to, as p >ot Miss Flite would say, “so much youth and beauty.” In fact, a good rule to follow when undecided what to give, is to give table linen. A handsome lunch cloth and nankins will be enjoyed, and will help to increase the innocent pride a young housewife has in her new posses sions. Too much cottou-seed meal often causes it, and we would caution those who desire to make a strictly first class artio e in spi>earance, as well as flavor, not to use cotton-seed meal or uil meal alone, but only as au addition to grain.
