' Democratic Kentucky roHs op her tipie-houorcd majority, and the tri- nlnphant Democracy scores 50,000 ahead. Good for an "off-yearI" , The Georgetown Enquirer and the Ohmgeburg Times and Democrat are v growing excited over the tariff dis- - enseion. teacc, gentleinen, you cer tainly can "agree to di8agreo.' , am,-: Ben Butler, in his celebrated S csberryspeecli, said: "God has me in one way—that I mnst be fce linger dog in ' the fitfht. 1 e inuot lielp it, I cannot change it, and pon the whole, I do not wish to It.*; II | ■ | 11 Cl FREE TRADE ASD RROTECTIOX. Messrs. Editors: It is greatly to be It is now generally t 'ieved that Senator Hampton will no^ insist on re tiring to private life on the expiration of his term in the Senate. He seems to prefer private to public life, but his services are still at the command of the *‘dear people”. Norfolk (Va.) landmark says that "Tn South Carolina the railroad law should be entitled, ‘An act to pro hibit the muting down of rail*, ami fo^ the flirther purpose of driving off capital.’ No man fit to be outside of a lunatic asylum would to-day invest money in a railroad enterprise there, for none but idiots would to-day make a costly plant anywhere to be turned over bag and baggage to a set of star chamber commissioners to deal with at tljcir will.” This is rather vigor ous,'plain talk, and we are not prepar ed to say that it is wholly without foundation. regretted that our distinguished Sena tor Hampton has discarded the free trade doctrine so ably advocated by George McDuffie, his illustrious futher- iirlaw, and maintained for generations by all South Carolinians, and now ad vocates the doctrine of protection so long upheld by New England and v-cntisjTvmna to nit enrich{peiil of Calhoun, in 1833, in the United States Senate, said: "The real qnes- tlon'at issue is:, has this government a right to impose burdens on the capital and industry of one portion of the country, not with a view to revenue, llutHo benefit another? Did l commit myself to that system of oppression * * which has for its object the enriching of one portion of the conn try at the expense ef the other. * * Under the name of imports a power essentially different from tne taxing power is exercised—partaking much more of the character of a penalty than a tax.” We are really happy to learn that Senator Hampton repudiates the re cent alleged interview with a corre spondent of the Philadelphia Prens. The Boston Post says: "In conversa tion with a gentleman on the Fall Hiver boat fist Sunday night he em phatically denied the correctness of the interview, and claimed that most of the statements were the interviewers own inventions.” It would now be in order, especially under the present circumstances, for the Senator to give his constituents, through the columns of the News and Courier, his views upon the questions now before the public. We are anxious to hear from him ou the tariff and the Speakership. those States and the impoverishment of the Sooth. Senator Hampton is reported to. have said in a recent in terview: “The Souih hss too many growing industries (Qnerv: Is agri culture a growing industry?) to be in favor of striking down the tariff and absolutely opening the doors to for eign competition;” and ‘ onr mining and manufacturing interests are.but in their infancy, and wo must have an equitable (?) protection for them.” The line Democratic doctrine is tariff for revenue only, and if possi ble only upon articles not produced in this country. Thus only are tlie bur dens of government equitably distrib uted among all consumers throughout the Union. If Michigan wishes to encourage copper mining or Massa chusetts the making of shoes let them do so by State, con ties or exemption from taxes, hut for lioaven*-; sake let us not aid them in forcing taxes upon South Carolina to foster the infant in dustries of States one thousand miles off. Tills was a proceeding granted by Judge Wallace requiring Mr. Nix to show cause why his name should not be stricken from the roll of attor neys, because of alleged unprofessional and fraudulent conduct towards his clients. The case excited some interest throughout the Stale, and the decision will, of course, relieve Mr. Nix of all further suspense or anxiety in Uie matter. “AH that glitters is not gold” is a trite saying, and many have learned its trutii to their cost, for tlio endeavor to get some thing fine fora small price, hr.s in ,; e. t » them to bite at the astonishing offers made by unprincipled dealers.
