THE HERALD ON THE STAR ROUtE.
Upon the probable results of the
Star Route verdict, the New York
Herald speaks plainly, boldly and sen
sibly. No journal in the land wields a
more powerful and telling influence or
(1 >es half so much towards moulding
and shaping tho public sentiment of the
country. The Herald, with its won
derful facilities for information, c3n
feel the popular pulse, ami with a mar
vellous accuracy analyze the state of
the public mind. The following ex
tract from its leading editorial oif the
21st inst. will be read with interest:
We believe the star route verdict will
leave a profound and lasting impression ou
the public mind. It ought to. The men
declared “not guilty” are of no conse
quence; but the result of this trial will
justly be held by all thoughtful citizens as
an appeal which in its general tone
and spirit is calculated to wintKy sym
pathy of the people of the North aiiit
to promote the object for which it is
made. But some of General Hamp
ton's statements furnish an interesting
illustration of the different way in
which the old struggle is still regarded
in the two sections.

The Macon Telegraph says: “Some
of the papers arc discussing the im
portant question, ‘How to keep the
negro’. It isn’t a hard question to an
swer. Raise hogs and chickens, mel
ons and vegetables. Let him go to
town on Saturdays, run a big store
account and go home drunk. Don’t
make him work hard during the other
five days; and let him have a mule to
ride to deatli on Sundays in going to
and returning from ‘big funeral meet
ings’. Then he’ll be anchored, so that
only death can remove him.” Yes!
that the “party of great moral ideas” is no
longer entitled to their confidence ami
cannot be safely trusted with the people’s
money. The verdict is, Eo he srtre, but que
of many evidences to the sum# effect The
River and Harbor jobs, the Robeson navy
jobs, the impudent refusal to ftialce ade
quate reductions of taxation, the corrupt
determination to compel needless and sur- j
plus taxes out of the peopl'Vs -pockets,; the !
pension swindle, the unblushing alliance j
with all sorts of monopolies—all these!
prove that the Republican party link out
lived not merely its usefulness but its moral
sense. Bur it probably needed this result
of the star route trials to break the back of
the public’s patience.
The Presidential campaign Of 1884 will
be a battle between the people and the
friends of monopoly and jobbery. But in
such a contest the people, badly led, are
sometimes beaten. We shall ree what we
shall see.
Let the corrupt party bq assailed in
the campaign wherever its political
record is iVeak and rotten, and tiio
star route verdict and tho scapegoats
Dorsey and Brady will be important fac
tors in the solutfon of the political
problems of ’84. The ftittnV, for the
Democratic party and the people, teems
