Newspaper Borrowers. — Every successful newspaper has tiirfec classes of readers. First comes the honest, straightforward, prompt-paying sub scriber, who is never in arrears, and who seem to realize the ftiet that it costs something to run a newspaper This is the class of subscribers that editors love. They arc tlie backbone of the newspaper business. Next to tlie above conics the “slow coach” subscriber, who, like the cow’s tpil, is always behind. He will read the paper just as long as he can without paying for it, and when yon stop Ids paper because he won’t pay, he con siders the debt settl d. We h ive known this class to embrace many pro Icssed Christians and not a few preach ers—all ot which goes to prove that human nature is human nature. The editor don’t care much about this class of subscribers, and it is a source of relief to him when one of them comes in and “pays” up and stops “his paper.” The lust class of readers the borrower. Too mean aud stingy to subscribe for the paper, he sponges on bis neighbor, who in many cases,' loss able to pay for the paper than the “sponger.” These fellows can never find anything in the paper worth retir ing, which is the general reason they give for not subscribing, but somehow or otRcr there is always news enough in it to induce them to “sneak” ’round Unveiling the Monument- Address bfr Sen ator Hamilton. Camden, S. 0., June 20.—The Con federate soldiers’ monument Was un veiled here to-day. The crowd attend ing the ceremony was estimated at 8,000. Senators 1 lampion ami Rurtei\ Governor Thompson and other distin guished men were present. The cere monies of unveiling consisted of an artillery salute, dedicatory prayer, ode by tlie ladies, and addresses. The veil was stripped from the monument by a group of young ladies. Senator Hampton delivered the memorial oration. He 'paI'd a glowing tribute to the faith, devotion and pa-, ticnce of Southern women, and said when the true storv.of the war shall he written they would not only occupy the first place in our hearts, but the first in honor. Thev would always •epcl with scorn and indignation the imputation that, monuments to the Confederate dead WUrkcd the place where traitors slept. We of the South were neither traitors nor rebels, nor was our war in any proper, sense rebellion. It was strictly a Civil wftr, growing 0\it of conflicting in ercsts anil different constructions ot the con stitution bv opposing sections Of the country, lie congratulated tlie coun try that the future was auftpicidtis, that tlie sfeit rS of war we he obliterated by- time, and demanded that “our former enemies do justice to the motives that inspired our conduct.” The great questions which were at issue betiVeen thfe North and the South and which were left to Die ai bitratiient ot war were decided against us, hut the sword never waft decided and never will decide questions Involving great principles. The final judgment as to the motives and actions of than rests with a higher tribunal thaii any on this earth, and to that last great court of appeal must every question of right and wrong be submitted. But we have the Divine command to yield obedience to constituted authority, and it is the duty of every jrood citi- 3 n who receives the protection of the government to obey its law's. There is no inconsistency iVfottr giving fethd constitution and law s nndfer which wc live an earnest, conscientious support, w hile we hold in tender reverence the memory of the men who died for the cause we held to be just and right.
