The witty and sarcastic sallies of Merrick and Ingersoll in the star-route trials are quite interesting and amtis- iffg. In the course of Mr. Merrick’s argument, several days ago, he was frequently interrupted by Ids promi nent antagonist, IngcrsoU. Mr. Mer rick appealed to Ibo court for protec tion, and said he “had a right to fol low out his own line of reasoning—ho knew that it hurt.” Ingersoll retorted: “Ittloes not hurt—it is too absurd to hurt.” Mr. Merrick again protested against awy farther interruptions, and his opponent said: “Oh, well, I’ll go out and take a smoke.” Merrick re sponded, with feeling: “You had bet ter. You have made smoke enough here for seven days.” The reply was greeted with uncontrollable laughter. The Augusta Chronicle, speaking of Mr. Merrick, says: “Richard T. M'er- rick, though not in the best of health, has shown himself to be as eloquent as Ingersoll and a tunch belter lawyer. Speaking of the star route trial and Mr. Merrick’s connection therewith, the New York Times, which is chary ofcomplimcnt^ says the eminent coun sel spoke with wonderful power and that the salient points of the corrupt combination’s work are set before tl.e jury so plainly that uothing ca« weak en their force in minds of hitelligent and honest men.” shooting was eontomplated. The Florence JVwies Is out on the solemn subject of “engagements.” Our contemporary handles tile theme with some degree of skill, and his clear headed observations evidence little practical experience on the fascinating side of social life. The follow ing is a striking passage from the editorial: Engagements by the average specimen of the genv* homo are indulged in ns a de lightful pastime; they rarely at first give the matter a serious consideration, nor think of the consequences involved. A gentleman Always escapes unscathed, while the i^vy, as a result, takes a rather cupherui a.»c title, known in conversational botr rvy as a wall flower. A lady can’t be j careful in a matter that so deeply con- ' cems her future destiny; she should never smile favorably on the suit of any individ ual or encourage him until she Is ready to devote herself a sacrifice to the altar of Hymen. The Ohio Republicans have nomi nated Mr. Foraker for Governor, and his nomination is regarded as a triumph for Foster, who has Cyfe on rendlcton’s scat in the Senate, if ins party is victorious in the approaching campaign. The party platform speaks plainly and directly on the tariff. It The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun writes that the declaration by ex-Govcrnor Hendricks that he would accept S renominatioii by the Democrats as a candidate for Vice-President with Tilden lias created quite a sensation all over tlib country. The statement is the more surprising when it is remembered that lie was openly hostile to Tilden in 1870, ami refused to recognize him as the leader in that campaign. The writer con cludes in these words. If Mr. Tilden should consort to stand again ns a candidate, after what Mr. Hen dricks has said, it is more than improbable that any objection would be raised from any quarter of the Democratic camp to the enthusiastic renominatioii of the old ticket of 1876. None can doubt the absolute cer tainty of its election, for the master hand of Mr. Tilden would so dictate the policy of the campaign as to avoid the shoals and quicksands of tariff discussion. For our part we have always ad mired Mr. Tilden, ami we do not hesi tate to say tliat we reorard him as the ablest political organizer in the party. Knithe Democrajs cannot, afford to sctccT ir caiiURfaie ior me nrxi cam paign whose “master hand would so dictate tiie policy oi tho party as to avoid tho shoals and quicksands of tariff discussions.” Wk .must not AVOID THE TARIFF QUESTION—Oil the contrary it is the duty of the Demo cratic party to meet the issue of issues with open and manly frankness, aud if boldly and judiciously handled, the “outs” will, upon the flood-tide of free-trade, ride on to victory and to power! If Mr. Tilden is orthodox upon the tariff, wc shall gladly give him onr earnest support', if not the old gentle man must “step down and out.” Tim press of the State and of the country cannot say too much upon the import ance of Democratic consistency be tween the present aud Hie time for the assemblage of the next Democratic Convention. The first step in the right direction Will bo the election of a free-trade Speaker of the next Hottsc of Repre sentatives; the second, legislation look ing to tariff reform; third, the nomi nation of a Presidential candidate whose views are in harmony with that of the party; and, fourthly, the con duct of the campaign upon a solid, orthodox, free-trade platform. If this line of policy is strictly adhered Id, defeat is impossible aud victory is in evitable ! It is not the popularity or atWiiabili- ty of men, but a great living principle that must foreshadow the results of the ensuing campaign.
