Vwdicatiko Private Characteb.— At the close df the service last Sunday at, ^he Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Monticello, a conference whs held and resolutions were unanimously adopted to the effect that sifter a criti cal investigation of the assertion mtt&e by one Mflfrtin (the first Gtee’iback witness in the Monticello case) that Mr. J. T. McGill, one of the defend ants, swore and drank at the polls, the church affirms that no one in the com munity ever heard Brother McGill swear or*khfc4fr him to tafch a drink of liquor, J hfrA the church exonerates him from this vile slander. The church furthermore commends Brothers J. M. Kirkland,'James McGill and J. T. Dawkius, also defendants in, the case, to the sympathy of fhe •fmbftc'. They are, the chnrch affirms, among Fair- field’s best and most law-abiding citi- adtawnd ‘ht^h-foYfed Christian gen i.o- raen, Brother James McC&n ’bimig a class leader, and Sabbath school super intendent aud Brothers Kirkland and Dawkius 'two of its most prominent stewards. This declaration adds to the proof that the best and most active Democratic cfciSenS’bf Sbuticello were brought into this case with the inten tion of distressing and bullying the community. The Election Cases.—The exam ination of oiii- Fairfield friends, charged with Violations of thb election laws, was resumed on Tuesday. The seven teen Democrats from Monticello were' promptly on hand on Monday evening, ready liiill awaiting further examina tion. On the train with them were some twenty negroes, who had been procured by the ne$ro circuit rider, Dave Screven, to swear any and every thing against the parties accused. The defendants are stopping at the Grand Central, in company with Major Wood ward and Captain Gaillard. Colonel Haskell, before die commencement of the examination on Tuesday morning, renewed the question of the jurisdic tion of the court. He contended that as the defendants were from the west ern district of South Carolina and Mr. Bau&sft was a commissioner for the eastern dislrict. he haft rib jurisdiefion. The commissioner overruled the ob jection. < Comisel for the prisoners also made the point that no personal knowl edge of the t alleged offense hail been expressed in the VarrhiA, and con- ioialtiu therefore that • the warrant should be dismissed. Mr. Bauskett held that the objection was too late, and that the only remedy for the de fendants VoUdA be habeat corpus. We shall ettempt in another issue to give an intelligible sy'riopsiS of the testi mony of -the different witnesses. The correspondent of the Augtifcta Chron icle, speaking of the trials, says: The preliminary investigation of the charges against certain Democrats of Fair- field county for alleged violation of the Federal eff&tlon haws was resumed before Commissioner Bauskett on Tuesday. Four colored witnesses were examined, and nothing in their evidence Justified the ac tion of the government officials in having tlieSe gentlemen arrested. Great indigna tion is felt at the conduct of the district attorney and his hirelings, Willard and Snyder, and some excitement prevails. Nowhere else possibly, outside of Russia, would such uu$arranUble proceedings be tolerated. restai-d -riet.
