4 K *.~ ; . rn.*' Nfe* ^ - 7 " : i- AQMOCTLTURa ]N’Dia*^uV» Potatoes.—Mr. John E. Lemmon, a member of the California Academy of Science^ has made a. very important discovery. He hss recently re turned from a botanical excursion of sev eral mouths If) the range of rugged u, un- tains in Arizona along the Mexican fron tier. The discovery is that of two or 3 varieties of native indigenous potatoes, some of whlcfi were growing in mountain meadows, Whbie'surrounding peaks were 10,(KM) feet above the level of the sea The specimens were about a* large as walnuts, and they? twerg to be-distributed among careful cultivators, Who will experiment with them for a number cf yean to see what can be nugle of them. - The original heme of the potato has long befen a matter of dispute, but we now know where one home is to a certainty. < It Is among the probabilities VhatffrAn these Arizona tu. ben will come a new and vigorous race of potatoes to take the place of the short lived varieties now grown. It la true we get occasidnal new tod flue varieties from seed bails, but aftes all, obey are from the same old stock, the inhentants of disease and constitution^ w&knees, as is proved by the fact that all of them'‘run out’’after a few yean. Tney do cot cease to appear in our markets because they are supersed ed by better varieties, but because they cease to be productive. Prof. Lemmon's uiscove/y will fcq bailed with, delight by scientists the world over, Plowing Gakbxns in Winter —reriods of mild weather occasionally occur during the winter, and where tie fall plowing has been ^emitted, It may profitably be done later. The agency of frost in making the soil fine and increasing its fertility, is not sufficiently appreciated. If ths soil be trenched or plowed after the crops are gathered and left in deep furrows, nearly twice the soriace is exposed to the froat. The alternate freezing aud thawing breaks down the coarse lumps and makes the plant food therein more available lor the crops of the coming season. Plowing at this season also uisturbs t he wiutej re treat of many insects that will be destroy ed by exposure to iroet. The advantage of working ths soil in late tall and winter is 8eea,iA the cuuiyatloo of celery. The stining of the soil in blanching the crop, aud the rough shape in which the trenches are lett, give the troat and rains a fair op portunity to improve its tilth. Frosts will tine the soil more penectly than any tools of the cultivator. It not duly releases the inert plant tood in tne soil, but makes the manuie that is adeed more available lot the crops of the next se ason. L’rrrisa Feed.—Thousands of farmers feed tneir stock upon corn stalks, bay or straw, thrown to them in the stables or the yards. A large portion of feecTso used is wasted, trampled under foot and soiled and made into manure. At least one-third of the feed so used is lost and in many ca sea one-naif of it is. If it is cut up by u fodder cutter and fed with romc meal, the whole is used and there is no waste. Con sider the auvuntage of this. A farmer who keeps 10 cows on the wasteful plan cau feed 13 or 14 on the better plan. If 10 cows pay him $500 in the year, he will have $C10 to 700 lor the 13 or 14 fed on the same food amt he will have four toads of manure in place of throe. This is an important gain. Last fall and winter an immense quan tity of sauerkraut was imported from Ger many, and was pronounced very superior. The Germans of Heading, l*a., prepare it in a way that many consider far better than most, other methods. They cut the cab bage into long, thin slices, removing the stringy core, and do not apply salt, but ram it down so tightly in stout barrels that it is covered by its own Jiquor. They then head up the barrel, leaving a hole in the top so as to admit of fermentation. Jn Germany the cabbage is rammed down by a machine propelled by steam, That re ceive* fn this country hist year camo in tierces holding HO gallons each. A cold snap usually comes in early au tumn, after which there are weeks of the nnest days In the year. It therefore pays to take Soma pain's to protect the Wnder plants duriofe two or three frosty nights, that their oloom may be enjoyed afterward. A light sheet, or even newspapeis spread over beds of geraniums, coleus etc., will save them, A group of cannas may be kept in this way in its beauty, while, if lett unprotected, the luxuriant growth is cut down by the Irost and soon becomes unsightly. Any onfe who'has gone to all the care and toil of bringing up a fine bed sf teuder plants to perfection should cer tainly use fvery precaution to preserve the plants aa long as possible. ^ Georgia planters are learning to imi tate the methods «t successful Northern farmers. They no longer grow cotton ex clusively, but have this year harvested a good crop of wheat and the best corn crop that Georgia ever pioduccd. ruey are this fall sowing largely ot. wheat again, with a view of making farming self sus taining. A new thing in the cotton region is the traveling gin, propelled by steam, aud ginning anil baling cotton at farmers' doors, alter the fashion of Northern steam thrashing machines. The young man goyig into the breeding of fine wool sheep should keep one or two leading points in view. One is to buy uothing second of third rate in quality be cause it is cheap. It is better to have ten animals of undoubted excellence than fifty of questionable merit, another point ia to ate that tne breeders thus secured are per fectly free from disease, and that tney are from equally sound parents. A start thus made is well made, thouich it be much more expensive than any other. A legacy of the war in Georgia is a plant called by the people Egyptian clo ver. It is very hardy, kills out weeds and other forage plants, is highly esteemed by stock, and affords abundant pasturage where nothing else will grow. If unmol ested it will of itself take possession of a field and produce a sod, requiring no seed ing, cultivation or attenfon of any kind. Bo saye s Southern paper, and, if true, the plant ii a valuable one, m Feeding —It costs a good deal it feed a cow, a horse or an ox through the long Winter. If there is any way by which food can lie economized so as to make it go further, it is evident that a proportion ate saving can he mode. And there is such a way. ' t- ' In buildings have warmth with complete ventilation,* with currents,'hut never under 40 nor oVer 70 degrees Fahrenheit, ■- ---■•»■ - A cold damp airy temperature will causa animals to consume more food with- nut corresponding result in bone, muscle, flesh or fat, much being used to keep up warmth. Stall feeding is better for fat making than box or yard management, irrespec tive of health. DOMESTIC. Treatment of Burns or Scalds. — Sprinkle cooking soda over the burnt surface at onoe and cover with a wet cloth, or immerse the burn in alum wa ter, strong brine or soap suds. A good salve for subsequent application is sweet oil and cooking Soda or linseed oil and turpentine. The thing to be done is to protect the burnt surface from the in fluence of the air. "An excellent appli cation to make at once is a tablespoon- ful of unsaltod lard, the white of one egg, and a teaspoonful cooking soda, well mixed. Barns or scalds upon the face are best treated by applying muci lage or gumarabio. It forms a com plete covering and obviates the use of cloths. Repeat the application every ten or fifteen minutes, until thick arti ficial skin has been formed. U is so transparent that the condition' of Hie burnt surface e&i be seen from day to day. It ultimately scales off and leaves a new skin, perfectly smooth and fair. How many mothers know that they can knit up as well as down ? When children have reached the age" when they wear ont the knees of their stock- ugs, and the heels and toes also, the ingenuity of woman must be exercised. In the most hopeless looking stocking there is usually a strip at least an eighth of a yard long which is too good to throw away, and yet is too much worn to pay to ravel out and knit over; from this then out off the ragged top and bot tom, and knit up as well as down. If you cannot match the color, Use another shade, or to a brown strip knit a scarlet or grayish-brown top. Nurse’s aprons, to be worn when washing and dressing the baby, are made of soft flannel, with a deep heih, which may be fastened with a feather or orosB-stitch; but useful ones of drab flannel are also much worn. These aprons should be made very long, so that if a door is suddenly opened in the nursery, the aprou cau be thrown up over the baby. Aprons made of canton flannel, with the soft side for the right side are inexpensive, and may be used in place of the flannel, although that is preferred if the expense is not too great. A new way, to many cooks, to prpare sausages for the table is to bake them. Oo not make an objection to this way of cooking them until yon have tned it once aud then I predict that you will not think of so doing. Put them in a oaking-tiu, turning them when necessa ry, just as if you were frying them. Urown them well; they are less greasy than if fried, and are altogether more delicate in every way. If possible, ap ples in some form should always accom pany sausage or pork oi any kind to the table. A handsome curtain or lambrequin to be fastened to the bottom of the lowest shelf on a hanging ebony cabinet is made of olive satin. It is about ten inches deep; a vine is painted on it of tmght but small flowers; the edge is trimmed with a velvet band; it is straight at the lower edge, but scalloped at the upper, It should be run on at the bot tom, then turned, and the scalloped part blind stitched on. The scallops may be ornamented by putting several rows of yellow silk around them. Catch the silk at short distances with black or scarlet silk. Jersey’s for the Children.—Bright colored knit or woven jerseys are quite fashionable for children, and may be found in almost any size and color, those in warm reds or blue being most popular. They are generally worn with heavy white skirts of wash material, or they may be worn with very good effect with skirts of some contrasting color, or even oi the same shade, idthongh this is not so general and hardly as pretty. With deep cuffs aud collar of tinea grenadine or guipure embroidery and full white skirts, with the jersey caught high ou the hips, the costume is pretty and effective. Delicious sherbet is made of canned pineapple. To one can of pineapple idiow a pint of sugar aud one heaping tablespoonful of gelatine; chop the pineapple till it is very tine, add the juice from the can and the sugar, soak the gelatine for an hour or more, until dissolved, in cold watei, then add half a cuji ot hot water; stir this in with the pineapple. Let it stand until cold. This may be served with cake and ices at the close of supper. A very pretty way to fasten the cash- mere lining to a silk quilt is to first baste the outside caret ully to it, then measure it, and divide the measure in equal parts both lengthwise and cross wise of the quilt, so that it will be marked off in squares; at each ooruer of the square make a star with bright col ored embroidery silk; catch clear through to the silk. A cardinal lining with stars in yellow silk is very tasteful. The housewife who is ou the lookout for little ways to economize, will fiud it to her advantage, if she haa seamless sheets which have been used for several years, to tear or cut them in two in the dentre, and sew the outside edges together; lap them and stitch with a machine. Or they may be sewed over and over. Hem the raw edges, Bhsets turned in this way will last for a long time, The fever for decoration has led the majority of people to go wild and fill their parlors with trash, under the aer- ions misapprehension that it is aesthetic. Appropriateness has been lost sight of. It must not be forgotton that the use to which a room is pat should decide its decorative treatment, and a bare wall is oftimes quite as artistic as one covered with an incongruous collection of jim- cracks. Shoulder Gloves and Babb Arms.— Ladies shoulder gloves cost about $10 a pair. They cover the entire arm to the shoulder, and nothing uglier or more ungraceful was ever conceived in the brain of man. A new departure will ue the style in elegant society. What ever may be sail of bare arena they must be comfortable compared with arms that are laced or buttoned up and clasped to long, tight gloves. The rough gray building paper is being applied to all sorts of household deooyatlou. A handsome lambrequin is made by nailing an eight-inch strip of the paper to wooden mantel, with brass headed nails. It is painted effectively with poppies, or fox-glove, and finished with bands of black velvet and warm- tinted cashmere and deep fringes. An excellent dressing tor pou/try is made of a small loaf of baker’s bread; one-half of a eup of butter, the yolks of four eggs, pepper, salt, a little savory and two onions sliced and fried biown; then wet thoroughly with boiling water and mix well. ^Always strain lemonade which is in tended for a sick person. — 1 nifiMTiifi Til HUMOROUS. order “Now that as he her that it, Of ooqrsp h* forgot all about it be^j fore he was naff-way down town, 1 At the stojeJie jvas visited by soma country customers whom he thought it advisabio to entertain, so hedook them to the 'Zoological Garden to see the animals, showed them »boui generally, and finally brought up at home iu a hack abort'2.80 A* M.- — . “You didn't Order that .coal,” were his wife’ s greeting words. “Oh, yeah did!
