Dawson, of the News vnd Lvurier, has left for New York, whence lie will sail in a few days for Liverpool, fie will spend several months in Europe, principally in the . outhern portions of the continent, tukiii" a much-needed rest from edi torial cares. We wish him a prosper ous voyage, a pleasant tinic ’'ul a safe return. Macon Tdcyrai>h; Tire temp ranee question has become one of great im portance in Georgia. It ought not to take the shape of a political affair. The Legislature should enact a local option law, applicable to the whole Stale, and leave the citizens of the various counties to regulate for then)' selves, and without regard to party, the matter of the sale or prohibition of the sale of liquor. TVvt/nMOitE Sun: A hill has passed both houses of the West Virginia Leg- j.-lature, making the fund.realized from the tax on dogs subject to the loss sus tained by the killing of sheep by dogs. This law is in force in a number of the Virginia counties and operates well, but a better way would bo to abolish at least four-fifths of the dogs in both Slates, which done, sheep raising would undoubtedly become a leading industry. Tiik complete immigration statistics for,the year 1882, published by the Treasury Department quite recently, show the total immigration for the year to have been 712,512. This is a inaguith cut showing, but the increase over 1881 is only b per cent. Of the whole number of arrivals, New York received 472.itt!8, or considerably more than one-half. Three times ns many came from Germany as from any other country. A swekfino hill regulating the sale] of liquors has been introduced in thej New .Jersey Legislature, with some prospect of its passage. It requires each liquor dealer to tile a bond cfi $-*,000 as a guarantee for the maiutcu- j t.uce of good order, and makes the | license fees lor the onlo of malt liquors from $100 to $2{)0, anil for spirituous liquors from $250 to $500, according to the local ion of saloons. The bill also prohibits the sale of liquor to minors. Over a year ago Win. D. Murphy, of New York, sued.the lion. Wtu. F. English, of Indiana,, for $1,180- for speeches made in that State in the campaign ot 1830. English claimed that the speeches were volunteer speeches and that they wore not worth anythin", and that guch a contract as Murphy pretended to have made would he against public policy and void. To this the plaiutifis demurred, and Judge Larrcmoro Wednesday sus tained the demurrer, giving tlio du- feudaut leave to amend his answer. No Whiskey! Brown’s Iron Bitters 1 is one of the very few tonic medicines that are not com posed mostly of alcohol or whiskey, thus becoming a fruitful source of intemper ance by promoting a desire for rum. Brown’s Iron Bitters is guaranteed to be a non intoxicating stimulant, and it will, in nearly every case, take tlie place of all liquor, and at the same time abso lutely kill the desire for whiskey and other intoxi cating beverages. Rev. G. W. Rice, editor of the American Christian Re~ view, says of Brown’s Iron Bitters: Cin.,0.,Nov. »<5> r8$l. Gents:—The foolish wast ing of vital force in business, pleasure, and vicious indul gence of our people, makes your preparation a necessity v and if applied, will save hun dreds who resort to saloons for temporary recuperation. Brown’s Iron Bitters' has been thoroughly tested for dyspepsia, indigestion, biliousness, weakness, debib ity, overwork, rheumatism, neuralgia, consumption, liver complaints, kidney troubles, &c., and it never fails to render speedy and permanent relief SCHOOL COMMISSIONER'S REPORT, To HU Honor J.
