The scene following the wreokrwas terrible. A number of person*itoeru jammed amid the ruins of the train and roasted to death before tlie eyes of those helpless to save them. At pres- 'ent it is impossible to give the loss of life accurately, but it is believed from twelve to titteen persons Were killed or burned to death The dead, so far as known, are Mrs. John Cashel), wife of a well known mining man, burned; F. W. Pierson, express messenger, the porter of one of t he sleepers named Wright, was taken out also, but died soou after. Lawrence, porter of the other sleeper, was burned. It is feared that the wife of ex-Governor Downy, who with her husband was on the train, is among the dead. At 10.50 a-in. seven bodies had been laid out, some burned beyond recognition. From these facts and figures we may gather some ideaof the growth and prospect of the Lone Star State. The present system of raising reve nues for the General Government falls very heavily upon the agricultural in terests of the country. In a recent debate in the United States Senate, Mr. Davis, of West Virginia, stated that about eighty per cent, of our ex ports is derived from agriculture, that the average duty on articles used by tiie farmers of the country is about forty per cent., and that the value of our corn, hay and cotton crop alone fora single year was $1,400,000,000, and according to the estimate of the Bureau of Agriculture the entire farm I products in 1881 were worth about $3,500,000,000. Much is heard about the mines of California and Nevada, yet the value of tho annual wheat product of these States is greater than the value of their mineral products, and the total value of the crops of this country for a year will probably ex ceed that of all of the gold, and silver money in the world. Agriculture con tributes not only eighty per cent, of our exports, hut also about ninety per cent, of our internal revenue—tobacco being a direct product of tlie soil and whiskey an indirect one. The creation of an executive department of agricul ture, as proposed by the bill reported by the Senate committee, would not be costly.
