Columbia, January 6.—This city and
its vicinity have had more than their
share nf crimes and casnalt: :« during
tie past two weeks. A few days after
Christmas an atrocious imirder was
committed by a black fiend, the victim
being his sister-in-law; and for some
days after his capture lynching was
expected. He is now safe in jail, and
will surely hang.
Intelligence has reached tire city of
flic death of a daughter of Dr. Thos.
R. Center. She was standing before]
the fire, when her clothing caught ami 1
she was bus ned so seriously that death
* %
was a relief. Dr. Center’s mitncrous
friends in Fairfield will grieve with
him in this terrible bereavement.
On Wednesday two small boys
named Wilds wore playing with a
gun, when it was discharged with
fatal effect upon the smaller child.
On the same day a similar accident
occurred, by which Columbia loses one
other noblest citizens, and the State a
son she can ill-nflbrd to spare. Mr.

company with Mr. L. T. Levin, to sell
some properly. He carried a breech-
loading shot-gun, which was unfortu
nately loaded. Coming to a hill, the
occupants got out to w alk. On get
ting hack into the carriage the robe
become entangled with the hammer
ami the gun was discharged. The load
entered Mr. Barnwell’s left arm, shat
tering the bone below the elbow and
passing up towards the shoulder,
lacerating the arteries iiv a horrible
manner. Mr. Levin applied a tourni
quet, and hurried on to Mr. Mont
gomery’s, but it was many hours be
fore a surgeon was secured, and Mr.
Barnwell was so prostrated that no
operation could lie performed. He
sank gradually, and on Friday at one
o’clock passed peacefully away. Mr
