Miller died last week at his home near Yoiignesville. Mr. Miller had reiched the ripe old age of sixty-nine years, and had been generally in excellent health. His i occupation was 'hat of a miller, and ; he had spent his entire life in this j county. His kindly disposition, pleas- i ant manners and strict integrity won ' for him the high esteem of liis friends I and neighbors. Mr. Robert Aiken died on Saturday j at the extreme a?re of eurhtv-seven I vears. lie was a native of Ireland,! but had been a lomr time in this counI try. Fire.?The alarm of fire sonnded about half past one on Thursday brought the fire depirtment promptly j t othe nlace indicated? Mr. J. M. El- i liott's shop. The steamer reached the cistern at the corner first, but before steam was raised the colored fire company came up, and at once put a stream on the building. The colored men, as they always do, worked with a will, and the flames were very soon subdued. The promptness with which the firemen arrived on the spot, and the good work of the colored company, prevented a disastrous fire. The wind was blowing- hard at the time, and had the fire got headway the adjacent buildings would have stood a poor chance of escape?except that in a very few minutes the steamer was ready for work, and, with the ample supply of water on the spot, the flames could have been held well in check. Great praise is due to all the firemen for their prompt response to tht alarm and their good work at the fire. The hand engine was just the thing for the occasion, and the colored men made their j muscle tell. The steamer put some water on the building, but the flames were by that time quite subdued. The fire was caused by a spark from Mr. Elliott's engine, falling on the roof. The damage done was very little. Axother FiRE.-Last Friday night at a quarter past eight ox-lock, a fire was discovered in Messrs. Gooding & Elliott's warehouse in rear of their store, and in a few seconds the flames were leaping above the roof. The whole fire department turned out, the steamer taking the court house cistern and the hand engine being placed for Drotection at the cistern at Mr. Cath cart's corner. In a few* minutes two streams were playing1 through about 600 feet of hose and prevented the flames from spreading. The bnilding was consumed, and 3000 pounds of hay burned or damaged?loss $150. Messrs. Doty & Co. lost eight new Studebaker wagons and a Champion mower and reaper stored there?loss $600. The fire was evidently incendiary. Mr. J. O. Boag was run over by the hand engine and appeared to be badly hurt, though nothing definite could be ascertained at the time of going to press. "Vale" did not participate in the dance, but considered his enjoyment doubly enhanced by watching the movements of others trippiny: it on the light fantastic. Most especially did we enjoy the easy grace of the young daughter of our host, displayed in the prompt. quick movements of the racquet and the graceful, dreamy waltz. In due time supper was announced. and we were ushered into the dining-room, where the delicious viands lay spread before u*, to which every one seemed to do ample justice. The table was beautifully arranged, particularly the floral decorations, which showed exquisite ta^tc and skill. The purity and whiteness reminded us i)f wax work. Some of the most beautiful were the products of the forests. After dancing and promenading until it late hour, our party dispersed, much I to our kind host and hostess f for a very pleasant evening.?Many thanks to Mrs. D. G.
