The president's i address, by C. Dillard, of South Caro- J lina, pictured in glowing terms the j present condition, the aim and intent | of the society. The orations, "Matter and Mind," by. D. W. Frazieiv and "Capture Your Success," by E. P. Corbett, both of South Carolina, were ! . .. . masterly productions, and displayed j much mental power. J. R. Wilder, ofj South Carolina, spoke in glowing j terms of the good influence that pure! ambition had upon the world's pro- j gress. The declamations exhibited j much oratorical ability. The discus- !; sion between Mr. W. R. A. Palmer ' and Mx\ K. Miller, both of South Carolina, was highly commendable, ; the one bringing to light the pernicious influence of an unbounded, unlimited, and uncircumscribed press upon the masses, and the other the true and good influence it exerts in giving to ; the public the political, religious and j philos1-pineal views of men. The ; Eureka Journal, edited by Mr. S. D.; Fowler, of Virginia, was well received j and displayed great ability. The ex-1 ercise was well attended." Three of the students mentioned, Clarence Dillard. The Yarnsville Messenger has suspended publication, the outfit and good-will of the establishment have j been bought by Major McSweeney, of I the Hampton Guardian. This con- i solidation will prove beneficial alike to j publisher and people. Hauiptou couu- j ty can support but one good paper, I and McSweeney is the man to furnish j that sort. The Oragcburg Times and Demo- j crat has been enlarged to an ieght-col- j umu naoer. and is <rreatly improved j in every respect. The reputation it [ has borne in the oast will be more than sustained in the future. The Charleston Weekly News has been enlarged to an eight-page paper, j and the increase of space has nowise j affected the quality of the reading mat-1 ter. The enterprising publishers share j neither paius nor expense in making ! the Neics a first-class journal, and it is j gratifying to know that they have been successful. Supervisors of Registration.? "We remember the past, and we recognize in the present the changes, and are disposed to "hang our harps on the willows". The world moves and we must move with it.
