"Capture Your Success," by E. P.

masterly productions, and displayed j
much mental power. J. R. Wilder, ofj
South Carolina, spoke in glowing j
terms of the good influence that pure!

gress. The declamations exhibited j
much oratorical ability. The discus- !;
sion between Mr. W. R. A. Palmer '
and Mx\ K. Miller, both of South

the one bringing to light the pernicious
influence of an unbounded, unlimited,
and uncircumscribed press upon the
masses, and the other the true and
good influence it exerts in giving to ;
the public the political, religious and j

that sort.
The Oragcburg Times and Demo- j

in every respect. The reputation it [
has borne in the oast will be more than

Practical Suggestions on an Important Subject?
Facts and Figures? How to Make aj
Beginning".
Messrs. Editors'. It mav or it may |
not be true rhat our people are poor? j
as poor as they think they are; but we !
doubt it. They arc only poor by comparison
; and it is by comparison that
we know anything. "We remember
the past, and we recognize in the present
the changes, and are disposed to
"hang our harps on the willows".
The world moves and we must move
with it. The habiliments of the "old
South" are rapidly being shorn by the
scissors of Time; and already we observe
her scarred form clothed beautifully
bv the mechanic arts. Beneath
her inantle of eider down she carries
the busy spindle, and the mysterious
wheels with which she intends to teach
her children that to them new industry
which will bring them great prosperity
The cotton mill is not an experiment.
We have but to examine this great interest
in the frozen and once sterile
region of Sew England, and if we
question what we see (for it ie not unlike
a fantastic vision) let as listen to
Xr. Morrill, Senator from Vermont,
as he speaks in the Senat? ?f the United
Stale*. said:?
"In our cotton millt wa have?
Laborers amployed 175.187
Wages paid $ 41,Ml.106
Capital invested 20/./?1.8W
Value of productions 192,773.960
Bales of cotton used 1,787,000
Worth at Sets, per pound 87.50i,lX)0
Subtract cost of material
and wagcii ot labor from
value of production,
and vre have a profit to
capital of $93,348,860
Or nearly forty-five per
cent."
There is no regular business in the
world that pays like this. Several
ffgggm^maoaitmamasm m Msr&Mii
years ago we saw a statement of the |
selling prices of the stocks of the prin- j
eipal New England mills, and they 'j
ranged from tc> ?1,400 per share
of one hundred dollirs par value.
| The business men of Charleston, j
I Siijn-tniil?nr<r. Rock T1111. Sumter and !
; Chester are convinced, and are investi
ing their capital liberally, not for the
j public good, but because there is no
j enterprise that will bring to them so
j large, and so certain a dividend. We
| are told by the Spartanburg Herald
j that the subscription book of the Pacoi
let Manufacturing Company is fast beS
ing tilled?about $7o,000 having been
! subscribed. The Chester Bulletin says
| that on last Monday Hon. J. J. Hempj
hill opened lists of subscription for the
I MagneticManufacturingCompany, and
in a few hours received $60,(XX). President
Hutchinson says Northern capitalists
have clamored for stock in the Rock
Hill Factory, and wanted the company
to increase the stock, but the limit
j had been exhausted, and they had to te
turned off. That is the history of all
men and all things since the days of
Hercules. If we sit quietly and beg
for aid we will never receive it, but
| just so soon as we commence to help
i ourselves, will others rush to our asj
sistance.
