Wilson, Librarian of the University of North Carolina, is giv ing the State some interesting sta tistics on th query: "Does North Ca rolina Read? His latest article is on the distribution in North Carolina of the Progressive Farmer, The Lit erary Digest, The Ladies Home Jour nal and The Saturday Evening Post. In the list of counties ranked accord ing to the circulation of these jour nals, Graham stands at the bottom with 26 papers to 187 inhabitants, the population being 4,872. Bun combe heads the list with one paper to each 13 of its 64,184 inhabitants, but Dr. Wilson suggests that the high average here may be due in consider able measure to the fact that Bun combe is a tourist resort. The average circulation of these papers in the 100 counties is 26 in habitants per paper; 77 counties fall below this mark, these being counties with large negro population, counties, remotely, rural and all the mountain counties except Buncombe and Hen derson. Graham County, like many in the western part of the State, is well ridged with mountains and removed from the regular lines of rail and highway communication. Until the present good roads movement began, Graham, like many of its neighbors, was more comfortably visited afoot or on horseback than any other way. It is a county of large area and its 4000 population is tierefore scat'er ed. These factors do not make for numerous schools, villages, trading centers. But today with highways piercing even the most mountainous counties, with the gonsolidated school made possible because of lateral roads, a new type of life is evolving in Gra ham and in every ether country that has been detached from the stream of faster moving life. And where roads run and schools multiply, books, magazines and newspapers should oon follow.
