C., as second class mail mat ter. $2.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE COTTON GROWER MUST OUT WORK BOLL WEEVILS. The State. The boll weevil is most active and most destructive in wet weather. We understand, of course, that we are not telling those who have had weevils any new thing. Yet it is well enough to call attention to the fact and state that the coton grower must work in dustriously at the same time the weevil does if he expects to win in the fight. Just who should poison is a ques tion that is yet a little uderstood ac cording to reports and we state again that dusting will not pay on land that will not produce at least half a bale to the acre without the weevil. Those who disregard this fact must prepare for disappointment. More than that if you are not prepared, mentally or otherwise, to carry out the rules gov ernint; the use of calcium arsenate dust faithfully, better not start. But with those who should use the dust and who are prepared to do it, even though the operation is unpleasant and perhaps more or less satisfact ory, poisoning must be done when the poison itself will be most effective. Often this calls for work when the ground is muddy and the plants wet. During the maximum infestation, that is, when the boll weevil has brought out all of his generals, briga dier generals, lieutenants, corporals and all of his reserves, poisoning should be done at intervals of about four days. Like the Germans,, they have a wave system of attack and to meet these attacks it is necessary to poison about every fourth day for three successive times. Two or three applications during favorable weather may bring the weevil under control, and some farmers have made the mis take of supposing that he was out of business and have proceeded to let a rainy spell come and go and then to wake up to the realization that the weevil had been on the .job and had gotten in his disastrous work. Dur ing these rainy spells is exactly the time, as already indicated, when the T'HE P PROPST COMPANY is at Half Price REGAL SHOES 10 SATURDAY turday morning sixty pairs of . "The! weevil is busiest and when he must be fought hardest. He is not only busy, but numbers increase with sup rising rapidly, and even though the situation had been under control a few days earlier, poisoning again .is necessary, else about as much damage will' be done as if no poison at all had been used. The only way to be sure you are right is to let wet weather in terfere as little as possible with pois oning operations. Of course ,as the United States de partment of agriculture sets forth in a recent press service statement, poisoning can not be done during a pouring rain, but when the rain lets up there will be opportunity'to get back in the field and get the cotton dusted again. Even though some poison is lost on account of rain, ex perience demonstratates that the use of it under such circumstances is suf ficiently profitable to justify it. With* reference to atmospheric conditions, the government says: "A calm atnmos phere is the most important thing to *be considered when applying calcium arsenate to cotton to control the boll weevil-more important than dew or other moisture on the cotton plants. Success depends in getting all of the plant surface thoroughly covered with the fine particles of poison dust. The dust comes out of the machine in a cloud and hangs in the air for some time before settling. If the wind blows during this time, much of it never settles where it is wanted but drifts beyond the cotton to other crops or is dissipated by the wind. It is not always possible, of course, to get a perfectly calm atmosphere at the time the dusting must be done. Neverthe less it is urged that application be made when the atmosphere is stillest." We feel justified in again warning our readers that calcium arsenate is the only known successful boll wyevil poison, that the only method of using calcium arsenate that can be recom mended is in the aust form, and that the only way to apply this dust is arsenate dusters. These can be had with one of the specially built calcium from $12 on up. Apparently the one horse duster is becoming increasingly popular. It is a machine that will handle two rows at a time with very satisfactory results and can be had for around $100. Mr. Coad in one of his most recent statements said that the number of over wintered boll weevils in many districts where ac curate counts have been made were as plentiful on June 10 as a month later under former conditions. With anything like normal conditions, he 'ROPST WINNSBORO, S. C. 0. PULL 'EM TIGE -they won't weaken becc are Buster Brown Hose. 1 they get more mileage out Brown socks than any oth make. It should be recalled that poiso ing should be started when from 10 to 15 percent. of the squares have been punctured. Many fields have al ready been found 'where there are sufficient weevils to destroy practi cally all squares as they are formed. Under such cconditions cotton will nver bloom unless the weevils are controlled. For these reasons the authorities say it will be necessary to poison earlier this year than ever before. Under heavy early infesta tion applications of poison should be made as soon as the cotton starts squaring freely, or about the time four or five squares are found to the stalk . The regular poisoning sched ule should be started at that time and continued along the lines of usual recommendation. When infestation reaches a point where practically all squares are punc tured, the weevil begins to yearn for new worlds to conquer and begins his search. Up to the present time this movement has occured from late in July to the last of August, depending on locality. Migration will probably start several weeks earlier than that this year. Therefore, poisoning will not only be required at an earlier date than usual but later than usual on account of weevils from neighbor ing fields that have not been poison ed. All of this, as summarized by the government experiment station, means: "Successful weevil control this year is going to require more effort and more poison per acre than has ever been the case in the past. On the other hand wherever the land is buf ficicently fertile to justify such an ef fort, there is much more assurance of profit from the operation than is usually the case. The increase in the cost per acre brought about by the increased number of applications nec essary will be far more than compen sated for by the fact that the weevill damage without poisoning will be fa greater than normal, and thus t margin of profit on the operationi tremendously . increased. In ot words, a heavy weevil infestation su as we have this year means a grea expenditure per acre for poisoning successfully control it, but it means a greater actual net profi dollars and cents per acre from poisoning operations."
