DEES Editor and Publisher Entered in the post office at Winns boro, S. C., as second class mail mat ter. $2.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE THE PASSING OF THE OLD. At last work has begun on the new school building. At least the destruc tion of the old one has begun. We wonder if it would not be a good idea for those who are sentimentally in clined to stay away from the site un til the demolition has been completed. We doubt if a person in Winnsboro could view the old building in a state of wreck without memories sad and joyful-without a feeling of personal loss to see the old Mt. Zion Institute levelled-a temple wherein new hopes and dreams and ideals were inspired -and, too, some sorrows experienced, ~sulting in a new faith born. Has *it not stood for generations as a vis ible sign of a covenant made by our forefathers that their children should neter be in the bondage of illiteracy ? Hctv can the youngest member of a noble people be not impressed when he stands by the levelled walls where ,in were instilled the principles of hon rantruth and all the virtues he respects and reveres in the life of his father and his father's father ? Must he~ not involuntarily uncover and be m ved to exclaim, "This is hallowed grund ?" twould not have been entirely in * jropriate for the occasion of the removal of the old building to be ni rked with fitting ceremonies-the pqsing of the old. It is very likely that the dedication of the new build ing will be attended with magnifi cehit exercises. The tearing down of th'e old might have been fittingly ob served. The removal of a landmark w'pch has become grafted to the tree ofour community existence cannot be removed without a readjustment, a diversion of vital influences, a shift ing of responsibility. The taking away of the old struc ture is symbolic to as of the passing of tZhe old order. With the assump tion of control by the new order, the comingr of new conditions, there is brought to us a great responsibility. How will i~t be met ? "The ! improved equipment, greater results should be expected. What will be done with the increased obligations and requirements which go with better equipment and greater possi bilities ? Will we come up to expec tations ? Above Mt. Zion for ages has flown a banner of truth and hon or, and all who went forth from her doors were enrolled in that cause. We may not lift our flag higher, but cannot we gather more recruits in the cause of right and justice by incul cating in the minds of more pupils the contagious idea of correct principles; teach them that the goal of education is better relations between mankind, that a man IS his brother's keeper ? We must leave the old policy of ev ery man for himself and forget the theory of the survival of the fittest. With increased education comes a big ger conception of the aim of the Cre ator-the mind of man must become better acquaintedl with the doctrine of the Great Teacher, the fundamen tal principle of which is brotherhood. Man to man, community to communi ty, capital to labor, nation to nation, all must be educated to that doctrine. That was the principle for which the Old Mt. Zion stood. The new school must also stand as a "lamp amid the darkness." WINNSBORO'S FUTURE. Although the Town Council has a gain called an election to determine if the people of Winnsboro wish to issue bonds to raise money to pave the streets of the town, there has not been heard nearly so much argument against it as when it was ordered some months ago and recalled. We trust that this is a hopeful sign. We hope that it is an indication that there will be no active opposition to the bonds an'd that the election will carry by a larger majority than if it had been held when first ordered. There is very little doubt that it will pass. Would'nt it be a fine thing if it was unanimous, without a single dissent ing vote; an expression that the people of Winnsboro are united in the acknowledgement that the town needs these permanent improvements and are determined to have them, that we with pride can say "this is my own, my native land". Along with other birthrights here we have inherited in traditions of honor and upright ness a jewel, a pearl of great price. Shall we let the pearl remain in a shoddy setting, or let the one which was once brilliant become tarnished ? It is true that the setting does not ad can-o arfec te intrinsic value 'ROPST 3 WINNSBORO, S. Shall we put up the picture of a long line of illustrious men for daily inspection among the family and household gods, and point to these pictures in a gilt frame or one of veneer ? Are we true to the ideals and standards set for us by them ? From the time the first tree was cut down, their motto was go forward. Are we doing it? Are we making the same progress forward that they did ? Considering our beginning as taken from their hands compared with theirs being with nothing, has our progress been worthy of our inheritance ? NO! Under that comparison have we not been slothful! Would your father and our father be proud of our careers? Would he feel in fact we have been found wanting, would they not have to acknowledge that we did not have the same ability to meet difficulties, the same lack for which a few modern, men are afraid when they say they ' do not want to leave a debt for their children to pay. The children always . have to pay. So, to the young people, those who now own property and expect to in herit more, if you feel that there is no future to this town, that the prop erty you expect to own will not en hance in value, that it cannot even keep its present value, that there is nothing ahead but privation and tax burdens, that your intellect is such that you cannot take care of yourself and make money and pay a debt which was made to stabilize the value of that same inheritance; if you ,be lieve all that, then we advise you VOTE AGAINST THE BOND IS SUE. But do you believe that? Is there a single man in town who be-. lieves that? Of course not. How ever, if you believe that Winnsboro is the town of the future, VOTE FOR THE BONDS. And if those men in town who oppose this issue on those grounds believe that opportunities and pros pects in this town have reached a stage of full ripeness, that from now the future of Winrisboro will be that of dlecay and, depreciation, that your son with the same possessions you had, can not hold them and expand, if you are afraid of his future, then VOTE AGAINST THE BONDS. But who believes that ? So, if you think that Winnsboro will develop and grow and regain the prestige in the finan cial and intellectual world which was once hers, VOTE FOR THE BOND ISSUE. It is true that Winnsboro was once .identified throughout the world throuigh Mt. Zion Institute and the men who received their training VEEKLY JULY 14th, 1922. The most farcial argument against the bonds is that the members of Council are young men. Were not practically all reformation brought about by young men ? They are the Ireamers, and have the courage to execute them. They take a chance, and usually win. J. E. B. Stuart was hirty one, and Stonewall Jackson, hirty nine.
