What About that Public Library. Some weeks ago a number ol ladies of the Better Winnsborc Club became interested in a public library for Winnsbcro and SomE steps were taken looking to the establishment of such an institu tion in Winnsboro. Mrs. K. R. McMaster took the matter ur with the Carnegie Library (e partment and obtained informa tion as to what and how aid could be secured from that source but since that time the matter seems to have been dropped and we sus pect the reason for this lull is that the ladies did not get the support in this undertaking from the busi ness men of the town that the. deserved'or must have in order to establish a library here in Winnsboro. We have not heard any of them say that this was the case but we venture the asser tion that if the business men of Winnsboro will give the support that they should that the ladies will do their part. And, may we ask, why this lack of suppor.t? It is certainly a deserving and important institution and one that should be established here. Our business men need to awake as to the importance of these things if we ever expect to have sneh a town as we should all like to see and have. We suggest now to the ladies that they visit each man in the town and get his ideas as to what he favors along thi3 line and then they will have something tangible to work on. We must not let the matter drop where it is. At the meeting Monday night some were inclined to criticise somebody for allowing the carni val gamblers to load and ship on Sunday. They should be allowed to get out on the first traIn always and -svith an injunction that we will not tolerate them again. If we cannot have an agricultural fair without the as sistance of this class of people we had better suspend. The fair authorities thought that they were getting some innocent amusement for those who attend ed the fair but they were simfply picked up and will be next tIme they undertake to secure amuse Y:enit from this class of people. An amusement committee should be appointed before the next fair and let this committee arrange a schedule of amusements gotten ur by home ppople and children. Thi1s can be done and nobody will be fleeced by gamblei's. We~ haven' heard a w:ord from Mrs. Hiuges and daughter since the Congratulated the old man onr Tuesday night of last week and retired for the night. After taking measurement of the height of women in France, England and America, a doctor announces that the English woman is the tallest and the American comes next. The aver age height of the Frenchwoman is five feet one inch. The American wom an is nearly two inches taller, and the women of Great Britain one-half inch taller than the latter. American women are heavier, their average weight being about 117 pounds. Had Proved It. At an evening party the hostess had coaxed a protesting guest to sing. Af ter the song she went up to him smil lng. "Oh, Mr. Jenkins," she said, "you must never tell me again that you can't sing-I know now !" Vigilance Required. "All things come to him who waits, you know," he said, yawning. "Yes," replied his wife; "but they don't always break in and wake him up."--Boston Transcript. Sawed-Off Sermon.
