C. THE GREAT FALLS Of t h e Catawba -- Their Beautiful Scenery--Their History a n d t h e Present Development. . (Written for The Sate by F. . . tCrei t. There is no truer saying than this: "A prophet is not withot honor save in his own conutry;" aud it can be applied with equal force to the beautiful scenery in I our own land. Travelers to Eu rope are often asked, 'Why is it you leave the States to come here before you have explored your own beautiful land?" and having said this much by way of intro duction, I will apply it to some of the beautiful scenery in old South Carolina, in the Great Falls of the Catawba river. Many will say, "Why, I never thought of this before." "I knew we had the Catawba river, etc." The artistic in heart and sentiment often point out objects of interest at our own doors of which we have never thought, and thus through others, we are taught to appreciate the good and beautiful around us. Rising in the Blue Ridge mountains of No'rth Carolina, the Catawba river flows s o u t b, through South Carolina. It is called Catawba until it reaches Fairfield county where it mingles with the waters of Wateree creek and there loses its former name,: and is called Wateree river. At the southeastern ex tremity of Richland county the Wateree joins the Congaree and together they form the Santee. Onward they go to add their strength to the great Atlantic ocean, and thus play a part in mAking this great ocean just a little part of their own. In the eaaly part of the eigh teenth century, before railroadE had ever been more than a fabric of a dream, the State of South Carolina conceived the idea of canaling all the shoals of her rivers, in order to transport her varied products to the ocean. II is said that South Carolina spent $5,000,000 on this work. In spite of this large expenditure, it is very doubtful if any practical use was ever made of these canals in the upper part of the State. One of the large shoals of the Catawba, where the waterfall is 173 feet in a distance of eight miles, is called "Great Falls.' Here the water tumbles over rocks and makes wild rushes be tween granite hills, which amount in some places to tower ing bluffs and from whose majes. tic heights one can have a view of the river for miles. An artist would grow wild at the rare beauty of the scenery-the fern covered hills and boulders wrap ped in a mantle of moss. ~ The 12 locks on the canal here are more than 100 years old, but are still in a wonderful state of preservation. In one of them may be seen remains of the. old wooden lock's gate. The walls of the locks are made of cut granite, and the workmanship is so beautiful that it attracts the interest not only of sight-seers but of skilled engineers. The canal empties into Rocky creek. at the point separating Fairfield and Chester counties. The ditch of the canal has in some places filled with dirt at d in it are growing tall trees, some of which are several feet in diameter. fAt one place the canal runs out into the river, a granite breakwater wall dividing it from the river. At these falls was built by a Mr. McCullough, ~ perhaps the first cotton factory in South Carolina run by water power, and the remains of the >ld foundation may still be seen. Jhe of the deeds granting the and to McCullough is signed by 1homats Jefferson. At this place e rck h dge extends out into the 'er, forzuing a flat surface of L50 f. et, and on this our fore a ha s auchorn d a mill, by which 1 the coin anid meal of that ect on were evound. At this on antic spot, here the white tipped watteis da..h over the ocks', and te -matdly on be tween the ste e , raged banks, lcovee with j.e aniioe-trimnmed da fe'ery Maiy the annual pic nic. The "Gre at Fatlls" are- at the corter of four counties, Chesterfield. andi Lancaster, Ker shaw and Fairfield, and repre sentatives from these sections congregate for these picnics, sometimes to the number of 2,000 or 3,000. Near the picnic grounds are the vineclad walls of what is known as the "Rock House," which was built for the keeper of the locks. The cut granite walls are .well preserved, while the wodwork has long since rotted away. Besides its romantic beauty the place has a history which may be of some degree of, interest. On the top of one .of the highteet hills, near the pic nic grounds, commanding a view of five or six miles, are the re mains of the old Revolutionary fort, ".Dearborn," which was garrisoned by the United States soldiers. The fort, which was built to guard the approach from ithe ocean, got its name from fame, who was secretary of wart during the eight years of Jefier son's administration. Places all around are pointed out as scenes of duels between army officers. In 1802. when CongreSs desired to establish an institution for the training of soldiers, the most prominent two ! places inentioned for the loca tion of the military academy were West Point, New York, [ and Fort Dearborn, South Car olina. West Point received a inijority of only one vote. Tiis place is destined to be the scena of great industrial actvity. The waterpower, one of the finest in the South, has been purchascd by the Southern Power company, of which Dr. d Gill. Wylie, formerly of Chester, and now a capitalist of New York is president. There are over 1,000 men at work. The plan is to supply electrical power all over the State. The power is estimated to be over 100,000 horse-power-enough to supply power for North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. t The contract is to be complet ed in three years. Is the Moon Inhabited. She occupied one of the best rooms and sat at the same table with her host and hoste4 At one of the meals the hostess said: "Mrs. Jones, you were a slave, weren't you?"~ "Yes, marm," replied Mrs. Jones. "I b'longed to Mar's Robert Howell." "I suppose he never invited you to eat at his table,"' remarked the Boston woman.
