MASTED COMPANVY. mm 'S HISTORY. uable Volume bby fIlr. Selby on the History of the Capital City.--Of Special- Inter est in Fairfield. "Memorabilia," by Mr. Julian A.. Selby, is a unique and most entertaining publication. Mr. Selby's Memorabilia is a salma gundi of hundreds of anecdotes of men and affairs. During his life of more than seventy years in Columbia, few events or incidents connected with the careers of prominent citizens or visitors to his nativ'e city have escaped his recollection. These reminiscences the author has put into readable shape and given to the world without any effort at chronolog ical arrangement. As he ex presses it, he has put them down just as they happened to be brought to mind, without actual connection, but in anecdotal sal magundi shape." The effect is pleasing. The reader imagines himself listening to the fireside stories of a genial old grandfather in the story-telling mood, who has [ived widelv and well, on whose memory the panorama of life has printed indelible pictures of the, virtues and follies of men and left im kindly disposed to his fellows. Nfany anecdotes relating to fam Elies in Columbia and elsewhere n the State, and that would be, ead with zest and curiosity, are oharitably kept under the seal of is. silence, for fear of causing )ain and opening old wounds. 'here is enough, however, for tmusement, instruction er enter ainment, under the following ,hapters: "The Old Columbia, Ceatre," "Anecdotes About Good. eople," "South Carolina College' Iffairs," "Truth Stranger than. Fiction," "Eccentric Characters," Mexican Volunteers," "Tragical affairs,""Short Sketches," "Grave. datters," "Old Time Dancing," 3; 'The Earthquake," "How the ladicals were Driven Out," "The, Uate Unpleasantness," "Vener Lble Subjects," "Columbia.-Old Lnd New, Odds and Ends.', In. ach of these chapters we find. rom five to twenty anecdotes told., n an original and chatty style. Che book concludes with the itory of "The Sack and Destruc ion of Columbia," written by' X'ilmore Sims for The Picenix. A few copies of this most in eresting volume on sale at the.: qews and Herald office for only k1.50 each. A Fearful Fate. It is a fearful fate to have to mndure the the terrible torture of Piles. "I can truthfully say,'> writes Harry Colsonj, of Mason rille, Ia., "that for Blind, Bleed ng, Itching and Protruding Piles, Bucklen's Arnica Salve is the best cure made." Also best for auts, burns and injuries. 25c. at E'cMaster Co., Obear Drug Co. mnd John H. McMaster & Co, Iruggists. Watching for Returns. The price of farming lands has gone much higher all over the State. Now, let's see how this :lass of property will be returned in January. It is a fact, which no one can successfully deny, that banks, cotton and oil mills, other manufacturing enterprises, and iown property, both real and per sonal, bear an unjust burden in the matter of taxation. Why should farming lands, which are worth $50 or more the acre, be returned at $5 the acre, and other property be assessed at 80) per cent of its value? This rate of assessment does not obtain in all instances, but we unhesitatingly declare that farming lands as a rule are assessed lower than any. other form of property. We are not arguing for higher assess-. ments, but we do want to see more equitable and just assess ments. Either raise farming lands or reduce other property. "Equa ~l justice to all men" and classes c f property should be done.-Ba.n berg Herald. A Certain Cure for Croup. When a child shows symlptoms 'of croup there is no time to exper iment with new remedies, no matter' hc w highly they may be recommended. There is one preparation that can al ways be depended upon. It has been in use for many years and has never been known to fail, viz.: Chamber lain's Congh Remedy. Mr. M1. F.Comp ton, of Market, Texas, says of it: "I have used Chamberlain's Cough Rem edy insevere cases of *croup with my children, and can truthfully say it al ways gives prompt relief." The many kind things tbat have >een S:Lid about the big issue of ;he News and Herald of last veek would make it possible for ,s to do a good deal of boasting it this time, if it were not for the lact that we are as busy as busy :an be preparing for even better things in the future. The truth is that the issue was much larger bhan we had planned for it to be. and it was with the greatest diffi -ulty that we were able to take care of the flood of advertisements that came in upon us. In the great rush many things happened quite differently from what we had ex pected, and we are not at all un mindful of a number of defects that crept in. Handling an edition of 1,700 copies of 20 pages is no small task, and we are pleased to know that our. subscribers and advertisers appreciate this extra effort on our part. Our next big issue will be brought out next week, and there will be 2,000 copies of it, so that we may be able to supply the great demand that was made upon us last week for extra copies, for it is a matter of fact that we were not near able to get around. Of course every wide-awake merchant will appre ciate what this big circulction will mean in the way of reacbing the people, and will not fail to have his advertisement therein in good style. But to be sure of get ting in and getting a good dis play, all copy will have to be in just as soon as possible. The bigger the ad. the better the pay; the sooner the copy is in the bet ter the display. A Thousand Dollars' Worth .f Good.
