Alois Lang, who himself played a minor Tolo-in two of tho passion plays. Lang always tried to follow the vir tues of tho Saviour. Once questioned as to how ho could fight against his fellow mon and'still try to bo Christ like, he replied that tho teachings of Christ himself were that all men should obey the laws of tho lapd. Who was the first Englishman ac tually to visit India? It is probable that hts name Is unfamiliar to most of us. It T?UB one Thomas Stephens, who ls generally considered to have had this distinction, and it was in the year 1579 that he set foot in the coun try. Stephens seems to have become a prominent person, for ho was ap pointed rector of the Jesuit's College, at Goa. Stephens wrote glowing let ters home to England; and lt was his countrymen for the acquisition of a Bharo in the wealth aad treasure of the Indies that did rauch, to, arouse the spirit of Englishmen to trade di rectly with India.
