1J L ? . 11 PROSPECTl'S OF THE ILLUSTRATED FAMILY FRIEND, A NEW PAPER, 1 ' ? ? 1 4l . T For the Fireside, (He I'arior, ana me heuurc Moment. TO BE PUBLISHED In Columbia, S. C-, on the first of November next, S. A. GODMAN , Late Editor of the Lauren*ville, S. C. "Herald," Author ^ of "The Slaver," "For'ard and Aft," "The Ocean Born," &c., <fcc. NOT from the lack of Newspapers in the Palmetto-State. nor from their want ol ability?for we feel proud :o know that the Pie*s of South Carolina will compare favorably with that of any State in the Union?arc we induced to anticipate the uccese of the Illustrated Family Friend. But, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked and unmistakeable talent displayed in the management of our cotemporaries, and cordially wishing them a full support and generous patronage, we yet think there is an ample field, now nn n.vnniert. Inr the rrrowth atld expansion Of the PS per which it will be our endeavor to make, not only nominally the Family Friend, but really and sincerely the Friend?leal, loyal an . true?of every family in the State. The fierce and fiery discussion of party politics, the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic, as leading features, we will leave for the pens no? 60 active anu eloquent in their service ; and whilst we will give to both subjects, as much sp^ce as will be desirable to the general reader, our greatest object and principal aim will be, the (evolvement, elucidation and exaltation, of the Pure, the Beautiful, the Useful and Instructive, in tho paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Science, Art and Agriculture. The Ideal being more easily comprehended and t more captivating, when combined in some degree with the Material?we will bring the Artist's skillful hand into requisition to illustrate the mind's conceptions, and to render the Family Friend as nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical means adapted to a mental end. In every number, therefore, we will give, in addition to a large amount of original reading matter from the pens of WRITERS OF ACKNOWLEDGED POW. ER AND GENIUS, AT LEAST FOUR HANDSOME, PERTINENT, ?? AND ELEGANTLY EXECUTED ENGRAVINGS. - | , To stimulate the young to renewed exertions -hrtfT^parsoit of knowledge, fame and fortune? and to^WoragVtfioSle who have already, entered .upon the actualities of life, to persevere and be steadfast in their strivings onward* and upward towards the goal of tbeirliopes, has in all ages and in all countries, been considered an object worthy of the noblest ambition. To effect ends w> desirable, what means can be imagined more likely to prove efficacious, than would familiarity with the painful struggles undergone, the privations borne, the difficulties overcome, by men now livj ing, who have distinguished themselves, either as Scholars, Statesmen, Politicians, Jurists, Physicians, Divines, Authors, Artists, Merchants, Mechanics, Military men, or Agriculturists. Consequently, as a new, and we think very valuable feature, we will give IN EVERY ISSUE. A CORRECT LIKENESS OF SOME PROMINENT SOUTH CAROLINIAN, WITH AN AUTHENTIC BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH. These are brief, very brief hints, at the intentions and purposes of the Illustrated Familt Friend?the narrow limits of a Prospectus will not permit us to make them more full; but scant as they are, we trust they are ample enough, to conceive every candid and intelligent person, that though we intend not to boast, we design puplishing a paper that will be worthy a liberal support. As it is our intention to make the Family Friend a permanent publication, upon which the friends who aid it now, in its infancy, may look with increasing pleasure as it improves with years?everything connected with its mechanical arrangement will be of the best quality. The Fami'y Friend will be issued weekly?printed on a Large Imperial sheet of fine white paper, with beautiful, clear type; and will be furnished to subscribers at 82 per annum : one dollar to be paid on the receipt of the first number, and one dollar at the expiration of six months. r. As to health, including all seasons of the year, we deny that any other CITY HAS MORE. HOOFLAND'S iCELEBRATED GERMAN BITTERS, PREPARED BY DR. C. M. JACKSON, VT THE GERMAN MEDICINE STORE, 120 Arch Street, Philadelphia. Theirpower over the alsive diseases is not. excelled, i, equalled, by any other preparation in the United States as the cures attest, in many cases after skilful phyicians, had failed. These Bitters are worthy the attention of invalids. Possessing great virtues in the rectification of diseases of the Liver and lesser glands, exercising the most searching powers in weakness and affections of llie digestive organs, they are, withal, safe, certain and pleasant. HEAD AND HE CONVINCED,Chas. Robinson, Esq., Easton, 3Id., in a letter to l>r. fackson, Jan. 9. 1830, said? " My wife and myself have received more benefit from your medicine than anv other we have ever taken lor the Dyspepsia and Liver disease." " Tlie Teruh Legion," published at Woodstock, Va., Jan. 10, 1830, said? . CHEAT MEDICINE." Among yipse we consider yytn^jy of notice is the tiemian Hitters, iiMf-nted by Dr. Hooftttoa.and prepared by Dr. Jnckson.in Philadelphia. One instance in particular, in which the superior virtues of lbts;UKdicine have been tested, has fallen under our observation. During the last summer, a son of Mr. Abraham Brabill, of this country, was very serionsly afflicted with Liver Complaint, and after trying in vain various remedies, he purchased a bottle of the Bitten and after nsing it, was so much relieved of his distredring malady that he procured another bottle, and i? realtncd entirely to health. BEAD FUUTtffiR A PEW PACTS. The "PhiladelphiaDemocrat," the leaditlff German journal of Philadelphia, The editor said, Nov 24th? "We again calfTftttention to the removal of the German Medicine more, the principal depot lor tne sate 01 ur iiooiland's German Bitters, from 2/8 Race to 120 Arch street, one door below Sixth. Owing to the increased demand for this medicine, and for the accommodation of his numerous patients, Dr, Jackson has been compelled to occupy a larger store. We. wish him success in his new quarters; he is deserving of it. The Bitters Mixture is withoutdoubt the greatest medicine extant for diseases of the Liver and Bowels. A stubborn case of Chronic Diarrhcrn has come underour notice, wherein the patient had exhausted the Materia Medicas of the different schools of medicine with no apparent benefit, lie was induced to use these bitters, and a few bottles of them have entirely cured him: Many ueh cases we could refer to. We hope our readers wi;l recollect this great restorative, should they be so unfortunate as to reqnire its use. Dr. Jackson possesses the original unpublished receipt of Dr. Hooflatid, at.d he prepares thjs medicine with this care. Those purchasing should call at his store, or see that his name is written upon the wrapper outside, and blown in the bottle, as imitations of all good articles are common." Judge M. M.Noah.age'illeman with great scientificand literary attainments, said in his "New York Weekly Messenger, Jan. 6. 1850, "1)r IIooklanii's OrRman Ritters.?Here is a preparation which the leudina presses in the Union appear to tie unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the most celebrated physician^ of modern tim s. the late Dr. Christopher Wilhelm lloofland. Professor to the University of Jena, Private Physician to the King of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical writers Germany has ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy ofhntnbng. and therefore a medicine ?>f which he was the inventor and endorser may be confidently relied mi. IN specially recommended it in liver complaint. dyspepsia. debility, vertigo, acidity of the stomach, constipation, and all complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellence, and several of the editors speak of its effects from their own individual experience. Under these ciicnmslanees we feel warranted not only in calling llio attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr. C. 31, Jackson's) preparation, but in recommending the article to all afflicted." MORE EVIDENCE. The " Philadelphia Saturday Gazette," the best family newspaper published in the United State*, the editor says of DR. IIOOFUND'S GERMAN HITTERS. "It is seldom that we recommend what are termed Paf cut Medicines to the confidence and patronage fnurreaders. and therefore, when we recommend Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters, we wish it to lie distinctly understood that we are not speaking of the nostrums of the day, that are noised about for a brief period and then forgotten alter they have done their guilty race of mischief, hut of a medicine longeltaclished, universally prized, ami which lias met the hearty approval of the faculty itself.' Evidence upon evidence has been received (like the foregoing) from all sections of the Union, the last three years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there Is more of it usep in the practice of the regular Physicians of Philadelphia than all other t "strums combined, a fact that can ea?iiy be established, and fully proving that a scientific preparation will meet with their quiet approval when p.-esented even in this form. That this medicine will cure liver complaint anddyspepta, no one can doubt, after using it xs directed. It acts specifically uisin the sinmach and liver?it is preferable to calomel in all bilioua diseases?ilte effect is immediate.? They can be administered to female or infant with safety and reliable benefit, at any time. BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS.
