NOT from the lack of Newspapers in the Palmetto-State,
nor from their want ot ability?for we
feel proud to know that the Frees of South Carolina
will compare favorably with that of any State
in the Union?are we induced to anticipate the
success of the Illustrated Family Friend.
But, whilst cheerfuliy acknowledging the marked
and unmistakeable talent displayed in the
management of our cotemporaries, and cordially
wishing them a full support and g? nerous patronage,
we yet think tltere is an ample field, now iiii
occupied, for the growth and expansion of ihe paper
which it will be our endeavor to make, not only
nominally the Family Friend, but really and
sincerely the Friend?leal, loyal an . true ?ol every
family in the State.
The fierce and fiery discussion of party politics,
the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic,
as leading features, we will .eave for the pens
now ro active and eloquent in their service ; and i
whilst we will give lo both subjects, as much
sp-.ce as will be desirable to the general reader,
our greatest object ar.d principal aim will be, the
evolvement, elucidation and exaltation, of tht
Pure, the Beautiful, the Useful and instructive, in
the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Science,
Art and Agriculture.
The Id> al being more easily comprehended and
more captivating, when combined in some degree
with the Material?we will bring the Artist's skillful
hand into requisition to illustrate the mind's
conceptions, and to render the Family Friend as
nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical
means adapted to a mental end In every number,
. therefore, we will give, in addition to a large
amount of original reading matter from the pens of
WRITERS OF ACKNOWLEDGED POWER

who have di-tinguished themselves, eiti er as

not permit us to make them more lull; but scant

conceive every candid and intelligent person, that
