SPARTANBURG HEAL ESTATE IF FOR INVESTS
SPARTAMH 1UJ MATTRESS WORKS. ^
V.
Prominent among t!ie many manufacturing
. industries of the city rnlgb
be mentioned the Spartanburg Mattress
Works located on South Church I
street which was established in February
1902 by A. D. Cooper.
By indomitable perseverence and
good business methods succeeded in
building u|> a fairly good business the
first year. The local trade did not ai
first give the new enterprise the support
that was anticipated by the management
due to tlie fact that it is g >nerally
supposed that goods purchased
from a distance are better than those
made at home. Hy Using good ma
terial and employing skilled labo
he managed to not only capture the
home trade but built up a good business
extending from beyond the
mountains to the seashore. Tha tor
iltcry now covers nearly three
{ tales.
IV. C. ALLKX.
On the 9th of January of the present
year Mr. Cooper sold cut to W.
C. Allen a native of Cleveland Coun- ^
.>> * ty, N. C., but more recently of Cllf- I
ton, S. C., where he was engaged a |
I number of years In mercantile pursuits.
Mr. Allen is now owner and
proprietor and gives his personal attention
to the smallest details of the
business. The output is from 25 to
40 mattresses per day owing to the |
grade. All grades are manufactured
from the cheapest straw and cotton
to the finest felts retailing from $10
to $15.
An crder fcr 100 fine felts and 100
paiis of pillows for a North Carolina
concern has just been executed. This
crder was secured alter a haul tight L
with several large factories.
The management employs no traveling
salesmen but prefers giving the
trade the benefit cf the salesman's
commission thus enabling the merchant
to deliver the goods in his house
as cheaply as if they were manufactured
in his own town. In addition
to manufacturing mattresses, feath
or beds, feather pillows and cotton
pillows special attcnti< n is given to
renovating all kinds t f beds and making
< dd sizes.
It is the intention cf the management
at no distant day to double the
capacity and inatall the very latest
improved machinery.
Eight hands are employed whose
wages avsrage from $12 to $1."? per
SBS week.
