In other "cases, -where but one paper was sub? scribed to, we have simply put the date of that subscription, indicating that the person owes from that date or has paid up to that date?" Mrs J. McD. A stalk of sugar-cane has been left at our j office by Mr. Davis Brogdon, which was grown on hisiarm, and is an extraordinary j specimen for this region. It was over five feet j long, fully matured, and. targe in proportion. ? The number ofr inches, in circumference we j would gladly-give, but as this stalk of sugar ! cane would'poly ie a small "chaw" for usall, j when viewedin comparison with a pomegran- j ate measuring 131-4- inches ia circumference, I which a friend presented to one of our cotem Dorarles th&otber day, we are therefore com- ! pelled to He low on the circumference ques? tion. As this pomegranate measured nearly fonr yards in circumference-if not in d?ame tes-we know the. sanctum mnst have been considerably cramped until sufficient time could elapse that all hands might devour the j afore-mentioned pomegranate. Motto Setts-Plate, Cup and Saucer, At Scafft'i Henry Joh nsor , the murderer of John Da- ! vis, who is to be hung on Friday, wrote j Sheriff Durant a letter yesterday afternoon, ? which is in substance, "I want either to be ! hung or turned loose, and not choked for several hours," He also requested that he be j given an extra good meal on Friday morning j before his execution, and says that if a biscuit ! is given to" him when on the gallows, he will ? eat it with relish. j The gallows will be placed io the jail yard, j between the stable and the fence facing Sum- J ter street, and the execution will be private only the witnesses provided by law being admitted. Johnson says that as he sits in his cell and listens to the carpenters at work on the gallows upon which he is to be hung, he would feel better satisfied if Orange Isaacs and others who he. claims are implicated ia his crime, were going along with bim. In ten days time the building will be ready for the machinery to be put up. The books are still open and a few more shares are yet undisposed of and any person or person desiring to invest should immediately make known their desire to the President, Mr. D. James Winn, who informed us yesterday morning that the Factory will be ready to commence operations by the first of January. Mr. Winn further informed us that he had just received some -eiders for yarns, and that he would have more orders to be filled than the Factory could turn out for some time after it com? mences running. One of the most popular medicines now before the American public, is Hop Bitters. You see it every where. People take it with good effect. It builds them up. It is more like the old fashioned bone set tea that has done, a world of good, If you dor/1 fee! just right try Hop Bitters.- Nanda News. Go to Scbwerin's for bargains. IN MEMORIAM. .-o When the body, worn by pain and suffering endured for weeks, succumbs, and the Angel Death touches with his wings, our loved ones and summons them away, though the paiu be keen, yet are we in a measure prepared for the shock, and while our hearts bleed we bow in submission, feeling we would not, if we could, call them back. But who but those having tbe experience, can fully realize the force of the blow, when in a moment, as it were, the strong and apparently healthy are called from time into eternity. These reflection are called up by the Death, of COL. R. L. HERIOT, which took place on Friday morning, Nov. 4th, 1881, io the 71st year of his age. Thus died, one of Sumter's oldest citizens, who though possessing the frailties incident to humanity, yet hada heart warm in sympathy for the sufferings of his fellow-man. The proudest tribute that could be paid, was made by a life-long associate, who said to the writer, "It was impossible for him to do an unkind act." lt was the writer's privilege to have been intimately acquainted with him only for a few short months, sufficiently long, however, to fully appreciate his sterling worth, and he, with many others, now mourns his loss. To the beloved partner of his life, she who through a long series of years, rejoiced when he rejoiced, and sorrowed when be sorrowed, words would be idle. God help her, as only He can. To hts sons and daughters, who now mourn the loss of a kind and loving Fa? ther, we would say, that He who ordered the stroke has promised to be "a Father to tbe fatherless," "and that be does oot willingly grieve or afflict the children of men."
