The Office of the Watchman and Southron has been permanently estab? lished at the old Stand of the True Southron, opposite the Court House, where we shall be pleased to see our patrons and the public generally. ^m Xl - The temperance lecture announced for Sat? urday night, will not be deliveaed. Read th? new advertisements of Mr. Alta? mont Mos-'S, and call oa him. ' Messrs Ducker & Bultman make an an? nouncement of importance to all consumers . cf groceries. **The late hour at -which the letter of our j Wedgefield correspondent came to hand only admits of oar getting in a. part of it. We have printed for the County Fair a ? number of large sized posters which Mr. Moise will soon distribute. Oa Saturdays there is more fuss and flurry in the Sumter market than in the great rows j of stalls o be found ia the cities. Cotton is pouring into town. We don't know whether it is the top or bottom crop, bot it is coming in, nevertheless. Forget what else you please, but do not for? get the entertainment on tc-morrow night. Seats are cheap and the entertain meat will be fine. Mr. R. C. Blanding returned this morning to Columbia to resume his studies af the Uni- j versity. Ia accordance with the Jewish faith-yes . terday being Yom Kipper, the Day of Atone? ment-the places of business of our Israelitish citizens were closed. We are informed that there are severe1 cases ! of "Pinkeye/'-the mysterious horse-disease, in Sumter. Rev. James McDowell, of Manning, has re? ceived and accepted a call to preach at the " Wedgefield Presbyterian church one Sunday . in every month. If you wish to be harmonious for a couple of hours to-morrow evening attend the con? cert at Music Hall, and by so doing you will be remembered in the dreams of the S. L. I. at Yorktown. We are pained io learn that Mr. Edmuod Scarborough, whose sickness we ehrooi tcled in our issue before the last, died on Wednesday the 28th ultimo. Mr. Scar? borough was a gentleman of worth, and ? had .won for himself many warm and constant friends. He never was married. We have had the pleasure of forming the acquaintance of Prof. Durham, who is a gen? tleman of pleasing address. We expect a suc? cessful session of our public schools, which ?opened on Monday with 75 scholars. An ox that had been tied by the neck and left in the yard of the Joint Stock Store, was found on Saturday night, choked to death by the rope. Bis owners endeavored to make the best of it by saving bis hide and meat, and when seen by this deponent they were whet? ting their knives oa Mr. Smiih's grave stones. Mrs. Dr. W. J. Pringle met with a serious accident yesterday, rcsultiug in the breaking of her right arm at the wrist. It seems that a .stearn driven.by Mr. Cooper, which was just ahead of Dr. Pringle's, became frightened from some cause, and ia their fright over-turned the buggy and wheeled about as if they intended j to run away. The Doctor being afraid that they would ran upon him, told his wife to leap J oat. In attempting to do so hastily, she | struck ber foot against the froat wheel aad fell with much force upon one hand. The jar caused a fracture and dislocation at the wrist joint. She was carried to the house of Rev. Mr. Hickson, where the bones were proper', y reset by Drs. Hughson, Mood and Blanding. Up to last night she was doing very well, and it was expected that she would be carried home to-day. Court. The Court of General Sessions convened on yesterday at 1G o'clock, his honor Judge Mackey presiding. The following bills were returned by the Grand Jury : The State vs Cain Flemming-Carrying concealed weapons. True Bill. The State vs Henry Mack-Arson. True I Bill. The State vs Julius Ii. Boyd and David J. j Boyd-Entry on land after notice prohibiting j the same. No Bill. The State vs Aaron Montgomery-Grand j Larceny. True Bill. The State vs Julius H. Boyd and David J. Boyd-Malicious trespass. No Bill. The Case against Henry Mack, indicted for Arson, occupied the Court all day until 5 j P. M. when the Jury returned a verdict of ? guilty, with a recommendation of mercy, j ' The Case of the State vs Cain Flemming was j ] then taken up. Orange Isaacs, who was said to have been j implicated in the murder of John Davis, near j | Lynchburg, ia February, was liberated to j ? day, the Grand Jury having found no bill | 1 against him. The case of Henry Johnson will be tried to? morrow afternoon and the following day. That Literary Society. Now that the evenings are getting cool and ; * longer, the Sumter Literary Society should J * be revived. It is therefore moved by the ! Watchman and Southron that thc President call j - a meeting for Thursday of next week. All ] 1 in favor, say "Aye;" Fire. The dwelling and kitchen of .Mr. Whiteman Durant of Lynchburg, wasburnton lastSatur dsy morning abo-ut 2 o'clock. The fire which was caused from a pan of ashes :<-ft on the kitchen floor, was discovered before it had extended to the dwelling, and most of the furniture was saved. No insurance. The Army Worm. : : . This pest bas made its ai.pearance in sever- .' . ' c al parts of the County, and has already com sumed the last hope of a "top crop" of cotton ? which the late rains had awakened in those ? sections. The late date at which it has ap- x peared is a cause for thankfulness since an i earlier arrival would '.ave proven much more destructive than the draught. Dr. R. M. Brelsford, of Clarendon, died on the 2$th ultimo. Mr. Edmund Scarborough, of Ma nu ville, died on last Wednesday. Mr. Henry L. B. Wells, of this place, lost a child on last Saturday. For the week ending Oct 4th, five colored people have died in this vicinity. _ -II - Sudden Death - Between sunset and dark on last Friday, while Pr:rnus Middleton, better known bj* the j name of Primus Dick of the Mt. Zion neigb j borhood, was on his way home, he suddenly ; dropped dead elf of his horse. Trial Justice j Carroll held the Coroner's inquest, and after the jury had consulted for some time, they finally returned a verdict that the deceased bad j come to his death by tho visitation of God. Peterson's Magazine f. r October is unusually good, even for that incomparable lady 's book. The steel engrav? ing, '-Don't Be Scared," is one of exception? al beauty ; and so is the colored, steel fashion plate, with its five, charming-looking, ex? quisitely-dressed ladies. There are two colored patterns, with designs for fans, a Hue of decoration that is now all the rage. The historical novelet, "The News From York? town," which bas attracted so much attention is appropriately concluded in this number, in time for the Yorktown Centennial." All the stones and novelets, however, are good ; in fact, in "Peterson," only the very best are given. We cannot too often -refer to this magazine as altogether the cheapest and the best of its kind. Where only one is taken, "Peterson" should be the one. for it fills more wants than any other. The terms are but two dollars a year. Great deductions are made to clubs, and handsome premiums are given to persons for getting np clubs, among them a beautifully bound photograph album: in short, the inducements of every kind are un? precedented. Specimens will be sent, gratis, j to persons wishing to get np cl tibs. Address, j for this purpose, or for subscribing, Chas. J. ! If is worth a trial.- I ( P a Iber. )-Sunda?/- Mercury. A Real -Necessity. We presume there is hardly a lady to be ! found in our broad land who, if she does not j already possess a sewing machine, expects I some day to become the owner of one. The household of a young wife is now con- j sidered incomplete without a sewing machine, j Next to her lover the thought uppermost in j the mind of the maiden just blooming into womanhood is a sewing machine. When asked by her parents or affianced what her Christmas or birth day present siiail j be, the answer in a majority of cases is, "A j sewing machine." But after the mind has been fully made up j to purchase one of these indispensable articles, j the question arises as to what kind of a ma- ? chine to buy. It should bc so sirr.ply constructed that the most inexperienced can successfully operate it. The other points mainly to be considered, j and which are the most desirable, are dura- ; bility. rapidity, capacity for work, ease of j operation, regularity of motion, uniformity of tension, and silence while in operation. Of all the various machines now upon the market, the ''Light Running New Home" fills the above requirements most satisfactorily. It is said to combine the good points of all other sewing machines, and in addition, bas many new improvements and labor-saving devices. The pr'ce is no higher than that of other machines, and every lady who is the happy j possessor of one may rest assured she has in? deed a treasure. All who s<*nd for the company's new illus- I trated catalogue and enri?se their advertise-j ment (printed on another page.) will receive j a set of fancy advertising novelties of value to those collecting cards, kc.
