The fenders of the Democrat were informed two weeks ngp tbal it was the purpose sf Geo. Deliver lo bold the oillce of clerk of the court, not withstanding ibe verdict of the peo ple, as declared in the late election, was overwhelmingly against his. In deed he had so long been accustomed to rule here that he began to think , the oillce, fixtures and profits were his by possession or some title which ? even the people could not annul. TIence to defend that right his last drop of blood and cent of money ?stood pledged. From this bold posi tion assumed by Bolivcr and these de fiant threats the people expected war -to the knife, and Mr. Robinson, the ?clerk elect, fortified himself behind the best of suritics and the Governor's -Commission before making the de mand for the surrender of Roliver's ?stronghold. Preparations being com pleted, the demand was made on Sat urday last for the unconditional sur render of office ami contents. This was refused, or a compliance, evaded 'by a request for time to consider as to his best action. Nothing more was heard of the matter until on Monday morning, about 11 o'clock, Mr. Robinson with his chief clerk Mr. L. II. Wannamnkcr, and a few friends, finding the door opened, walked into the clerk's office,, told ?t. G. Deliver and Dr. Malone, who were writing at their desks, that he had come to enter upon the duties of the olliee and that he had no use for them or need>of their i services. This was a bombshell in the camp, sud denly exploded and effective, and these gentlemen, taking in the situa tion, nt once retreated, leaving Mr. llobinson master of the field. The work of making an Inventory of every thing in the office wps immediately be^un and finally completed. During the day a notice was served on Mr. Geo. Bolivcr personally that Mr.! Robinson had assumed the-manage-! meet of the oillce and was ready to give a receipt for the property. This was answered by a long, point Jess and aimless protest which served only to excile a pleasant smile upon Mr. Robinson's features, because he knew Roliver was out und ho was in. Every thing necessary to conduct the business of the olliee successfully j was found except the seal which is locked up in the safe, I he key of which Bolivcr refuses to surrender. This, I however, does not materially matter as the general routine busines can be performed without it. Mr. Robinson is now ready to wait upon our citi zens who may have business in his office. j Lynching. Thice young colored demons, two hoys and a girl, aged respectively 15,1 10 and 18, murdered Mrs. Ada Ken-' nedy of Clmcndon County on the lib 1 instant in a most brutal and horri- : ble manner. A shoit whilo aller Mr. 1 Kennedy left home to secure thepres-1 ence of his mother with ids wife during a three days visit to Charles- ! ton, these fiends appeared, demand- i c I money and, being refused, biulally attacked Mrs. Kennedy win hoes and finally killed her by cleaving her skull with a hoe. One of the bo}s having been arrested, contested the cr'tne and lohl who engaged with him in committing the deed. The other I boy and girl were forthwith arrested 1 and by u vole of one hundred and j filly white men and fifty coloied men and women, the young murderers were lynched and hung to a irec until they J were dead. We aie no advocates of extreme measures and ceilainly not of any I mode of pioeedure which takes the j life of a fellow being ; but there ate circumstances and occasions when the slow processes of the law do not meet the emergency and, to save so ciety from panic, it becomes proper and n.'ccssury to deal summarily with ollcndcrs against its peace and sally. This seems lo be a case, the circumstances' ?f which evidently justify the menus employed. The same course would have boon follow ed iu any community of the North i against the safety of which the same crime had been perpetrated. Wo de sire to see our society free from even r the apprehension, ol such outrages, but this can never tie while contem pCiblc political leaders, such as we have, are suffered to poison the very elements of that society by exciting hatred and enmity between the races. Rid our country of these political vi j pors and we will hear of no more such crimes as the Clarendon and Branchvillc outrages. -?1>- ? m-?? -? The Legislature. This body continues at work and notwithstanding the purpose lo ad journ before Christmas are cutting out new business every day according as each member thinks best for the inter est of his county and State. Among the mailers perfected and passed is the bill introduced by our Senator Gen. J. F. Izlar to fix the bond of County Commissioners at $2,000 instead of S?O? as heretofore. We suppose the Commissioners lately elected will be required to give this bond. A special bill for certain counties, among which is Orangcburg, has passed to its sec ond reading prohibiting the buying of seed cotton, except for manufactur ing, in settlement between landlord and tenant and under process of law. It is likely now that this bill will be come a law unless it bo killed on : passing its third rending which is not ! usual. A bill has been Inlrodeecd to Iumend an act io prohibit persons from living together iu adullury. We hope ils previsions are sufficient ly defined and severe to put a slop lo j the evil and that the bill will pass. The bill lo utilize the labor ol prison ers in jail was injected. Two peti tions : one from 5000 ladies of Char leston and one from 3000 ladies of j Anderson, asking fur a low pn Iiibi ting the sale of liquor in the Stale, were unrolled in the House and meas ured respectively 30 and JO yards in leilght. These petitions were referred to a special committee of which our representative, Dr. Summers, is a member. The bill prohibiting the carndng of concealed weapons has occasion one or two hot discussion but has not yet assumed a form to allow r.n opinion of ils ftnial result. The appropriation and supply bills : arc being perfected rapidly and their j provision indicae about the same I lax levy as last year. Our Legislators. Among the important matters in troduced and likely to become enact ed laws by our legislature are the following, measure. A bill by Gen. Izlar creating a publitt guardian to ull such minors as inherit property not under a will and constituting the Master as such officer; also a bill to make the olliee of Master geneiaj throughout the counties of the State ; also a bill by Dr. Summers lo limit the sale of intoxicating liquors inclu ding bitters or other drinks with alco hol as tilt base ; also a bill to provide public scales at all points of trade where heavy products are weighed. These arc all trailers of general and local interest and look directly to the bcneOt of the Stale. Some of them we heartily endorse and hope they may be pushed successfully through. We are glad to sec our mem bers movcing forward in such mat ters making a history for our county land a reputation for themselves. j Judge Kershaw. The General Assembly has ag. iu elected Gen. J. IL Kershaw to the po sition of circuit Judge by an almost I unanimous vote. Judge Kershaw is one of the purest men in South Coro- | Una and the General Assembly hon-' ors itself and the Stutj by hisclcc-J ! lion lo this position. An occasional Washington Corres-j pondent of the Louisville Courier Journal writes thus: "It is not pro ! liable that Kellogg will t e turned out. i It is certain that he never should have , been turned in. He was no more en titled ton scat 'n the Senate, as an 1 original proposition, 'linn Hob Inger-' b:iII is entitled to a seat beside the angel Gabriel." Somh one says that "memory is the most valuable iillrihutu with which divinity has endowed man." Memo-' ry may do very well in some things, hut when it comes lo running a news- ! paper on lime we vole for hope every- j lime.
