I A THE DiBLMTOH HEH4LD i. s. Mcives, - - Wednesday, November S, 1890. An Honor. The Colombia Record, Florence Messenger, Marion Star L Sumter Ad vance and Dari.ixoton MkraM) Editor. are the only papers in the State that supported the Haskell ticket, and we are proud to have been one of the number. Numbers don’t make right,. \ ait x la. The Election. The election has come and gone, amd everything passed off quietly in this county. The smallest vote ever ‘ polled in Darlington was polled on last Tuesday. Tillman has said that a vote for him was an endorsement of Tillmanism and a " ote for Haskell was a repudiation of Tillmanism. For our part we are glad to be able to say that we have repudiated Till man and his methods and have pre vented the misfortune of ever being truthfully told that we endorsed Tillmanism. If Tillmanism is De mocracy we prefer to have none of it The following is the vote of Darlington product: For Governor: A. C. Haskell 97 B. H. Tillman 187 For Senator: J. W. Beasley 179 For Representatives: H. C. Burn 183 D. C. McCall 187 J. S. DuBose 191 For Probate Judge: T. H. Spain 288 For School Commissioner: W. H. Evans 284 A. W. WOODS & — k On page to of the Premium List of the State Agricultural and Mechanical Socie ty for the present year, will-be found the offer of Premiums amounting in the ag gregate to $o00, for the Counties making the best display of County Products, to he shown at the Fair November 10, 1800. The requirements are: “To the Coun ty making the Best and Largest Display of Products grown or produced by resi dents of the County, Pemiums will be awarded as follows: 1st Premium, f250; 2nd Premium, $150; 3rd Premium $100— In all, $500. All Grain must be shown in quantities not less than one-half bushel. The Judges making the award in this con test, will consider first, Quality; second, Quantity ; third, Variety; and fourth, Ar rangement. Articles for the County dis play will not count in the Individual Premium.” I beg that you call special attention to this feature, and urge your County to be a competitor in the contest. Aside from the money involved. County pride should stimulate our farmers to enter heartily into the matter, and thus show the pro gress of Agriculture in our State. I take it that the most effective plan would be for the several County Allian ces from theSub-Alliances, to canvass the matter at an early day, and thus become organized, so that by the first of Npvem- bereachCounty will be abletoknow what will be shown, and at what RailroajJSta tion shipments will be made. Uailroads require prepayment of freight, but upon its return to the original point of shipment, with the Certificate of the Secretary that the same had been on ex hibition, the amount will be refunded. I will be pleased to furnish a copy of the Premium List to all who may apply Thob. W. Holi.owav, Secretary, Pomaria, S. C. MARCO & LEWENTHAL, i. A it to Ketnrng from all the precincts in the county give the following unoffi cial result: Haskell 220 Tillman 1,268 Evans 743 Parrott 751 For the first time in her glorious history South Carolina is truly dis graced, and that too by the action of those who ought to have held her honor dearer than their lives. Tues day last will always be a dark day in the calender of South Carolina, and the remembrance of it will bring the blush of shame to the cheek of many who are now so carried away by pas sion and prejudice that they will not stop to reflect. For two years at least, we must have for the Governor of this Commonwealth a man who has secured the position by pursuing a course that is fortunately without parallel in onr State, and which should forever brand him with in famy. It is needless to detail the methods by which he has attained his ends; they are known to all. By Tuesday’s verdict we virtually say to the country at large that Tillman’s Charges are true, that our State offi cials are corrupt, and that Tillman, the modern Hercules, can alone cleanse the augean stable of its cor- ruption. If the people of onr State were in their right minds, they would feel more like clothing themselves in sackcloth and ashes instead of giv ing expression to shouts of rejoicing. It it impossible to understand how it was that some of onr most promi nent and honored citizens, after de nouncing Tillman and his methods, should yet vote for him, and this act at least endorse the man and his in famous falsehoods. This act will bring them many hours of future regret, and tyrannic conscience will not let them soon forget this great blunder. It is to the everlasting glory of South Carolina that some other sons have ntteged their protest I public roads, which has often been aga.nst this reproach being fastened, We f }}ink u 8 ^ ould ^ the duty of upon the State. Hudson, Pre siding Judge: The Grand Jury make the follow ing as their final presentment: During the year we have examined the offices and hooks of the several county officers, and find nothing to bring to the attention of the Court. In the Court House we find the jury rooms in unsatisfactory condi tion We recommend that they be furnished with comfortable settees and tables, and that more attention be paid to their cleanliness, and es pecially that proper means he taken to prevent the urinals from becoming offensive. Such settees as are pro vided frequently in the waiting rooms at the railroad depots we suggest would be economical and suitable. In the Sheriff's office we find there is need of a case for the preservation of such executions as have to be kept in that office. The one now in use is, in our judgment, not suited for the purpose. We have examined the Official Bonds of all the County officers, and find them, in pur judgment, adequate to protect the interests of the Comity and State. -• At the Poor House we find the Superintendent’s house in a bad con dition—the roof leaking, the plaster ing falling, and part of the under pinning giving way. The cottages have the windows badly broken, many of them with very few whole panes of glass. The inmates appear to he otherwise as well provided for as the means provided will allow, and we have no complaints from any of them. We regard the repairs re ferred to as of great importance and demanding immediate attention from the County Commissioners. The condition of the Public Roads in the County seems to have reached a point beyond the endurance of long-suffering public. Complaints come to us from every part of the county of important roads badly worked or not worked at all, many of the smaller bridges impassible or dangerous, and travel in some places almost impossible. In the opinion of many of onr citizens the road laws of the State are inadequate to the urgent state of our country; but the Grand Jury are of the opinion that the present laws, if enforced, would at least be sufficient to gi ve to the people of every part of the county roads that would admit of travel with an ordinary load, and without dan ger to horse or vehicle. Id tb« history of his State, with a record as pure as that of Bayard or Sydney; while that of Tillman will descend as that of the most unscru pulous politician and the most infa mous slanderer to whom South Car olina has ever had the misfortune t<f give birth. [Spaotal to Th© Darlington Herald.] Columbia, S. C., Oct. 5th, 5:30 p. Ml—Very few returns and none offi cial to-day, but it is generally admit ted that Till man for Governor and kill entire ticket have carried the State by at least 35,000 majority. Six of the seven Congressmen in this State are certainly Democratic and the seventh in doubt, with chance favoring the Democratic nominee as there are two Republican candidates fu the field. public, and to take legal steps to bring the parties so trespassing to justice. At the present term of the Court many cases have been sent up for ag gravated assault and battery. In our judgment a large proportion of these cases ought to have been adjudicated by the Trial Justices as cases of sim ple assault and battery within their jurisdiction. This course, if pur sued, would have not only saved the expense to the county of the investi gation by the Grand Jury, but would have promptly administered justice to the guilty parties proportioned to the gravity of the offence committed. We have heard with interest the remarks of the presiding Judge on the term of service of jurors. We recommend that the law requiring petit jurors to serve during the whole term of court he amended, and that the jurors lie summoned to serve on ly for one week. Thanking Your Honor for the clearness of your instructions, and for the courtesy and assistance ex tended to us in the discharge of our duties. Respectfully submitted, W m. A. Carbioan, Foreman. M.
