I Rain in the Heart.
If this wore nil?oh, if this wcrt'rtll)
That into each life mimic rain must fall,
There were fainter boVhj irt' the poet's rhyme ;
There were fewer wrccKifoh the chores of lime.
But tempests of woe pa?s over the smil,
Since winds of anguish wo cannot control,
And shock after slrVk We are called oh to hear,
Till the lips are wlitte with the 1.cu t's despair'!
' \ a y I I'~" ( 1
The shores of t iine with wrecks are strewn,
Into ihe car comes ever a moan?
"Wrecks of hopes that sot sail with glee,
"Wrecks of love sinking silently.
Many are hidden from the human eye,
Only God knowethhow deep they lie:
< Mily Ood heard when aro c tho cry,
"Help meto hear, oh help me to bear."
"into each life s?nte rain must fall,"
If thisweye ail?oh, if thiu were all;
Yet (here's a refuge from storm and blast,
Ciloria. I'atri?we'll reatdt it at lriht.
Be strong, be .strong, to my heart I cry,
The poarHri the Wounded heart doth lie;
Bays of sunshine arc given to all,
Tho' "into each life some rain must fall."

Faiim Notes.?It pays to raise corn
for winter forage?plant in drills, a bushel
to the acre. Cut stalks two feet from the
ground, if lurge; cure in stacks tied at
file torp till the stalk is dry (.some fo?r
weeks), then house, and not stack out for
rains to damage the forage. Our barns
ami stock-sheds arc gcuerully poor and
small. This is had economy. .Split more
hoards, and make largo and tight sliedT
rVnifa to prntect both stock and stock
feed. Then cattle do better, and drop
their manure under cover, and out of
-washing rains. One load of such manure
is worth more than five loads of old
weathered Stuff, with all the salts of
amonia, potash, and lime taken out of it.
A farmer who would sell fine mules of his
own raising for copper cents nnd think
; fhem gold erfglcSj would not he more mis
taken than thousands are, in regard to
the true vnluc of fertilizers. What all
lVoy\s ten years old ought to knov,} their
fathers have yet to learn. That is, the
value of carbon and the elements of wa
ter in wellet ripped out-door manure, of j
which they generally form ninety-eight
percent. ?Think of it, the precise things
? that form all manure are unknown to
planters and farmers. Im this wisdom, or
is it fofly? Our best friends on the farm
are named carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, ni
trogen, phosphoru3, nod sulphur. To
these add potash, magnesia, lime. Iron,
aud chlorine, and you will have the ele
ments of good manure.
Black against White Labor.?
Jotin II. Dent, of Georgia, in the planta
tion, gives his experience with bllicK and
white labor, which he has this year put to
the ?est, side by side on his farm, having
hired an equal number of exeh class of
laborers under precisely the same con
tracts. Tho results aro thus stated :
The negroes have made equally as
g ?od crops as the whites, were more atten
tive to field and lot duties, more complin
hie and obliging in everything required
of them, nnd decidedly more adhering to
their contracts; in n word, covering all
" points, they are much to he preferred to
the w hite labor. The whit<? laborers were
contentious, seeking every advantage,
faultfinding, and considered their con
tracts as Something which he might
turn into sonic speculation to his own ad
vantage pecuniarily, or in saving him
from labor. Their wants are insatiable,
n tid their worst features arc so soon as the ?
crops have beeil made, commences with
thorn, "they must begin to know about
another year's contract.'! Before hinting!
it to their cmployorSj tlr.v commence
tampering with the negroes, telling
them they have not been paid high
enough for their services, and putting
tlmni up to exact more. Thete plans are
to mnakc a tool of the nci/ro in carrying
out their point: fir-'., by making thorn dis
sutirfiied and contentious^ end uftor thus
succeeding, and causing them to give up
their places, where (hoy havevcttlly done
well, and finding out thai live employer 1
is firm in not yielding to their "exactions,
then the whites are willing to renew their
former contracts.
