Tin: Match Game ox Monday Af ternoon. ? According to previous announcement the Palmetto State and Orange Base Ball Clubs met on Monday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, on the old Muster Field, in rear of Rigg's Shop, to engage in a friendly game of base hall. Mr. Edward Carroll, of Branchville, was selected as umpire, nnd Messrs. E. M. Carroll and J. S. Albor gotti acted as seorers for their respective clubs. Time was called, and the contes tants, entered fairly into the fight, both with sanguine expectations of victory.? The battle lasted for several hours, with unnhnted interest. At the end of the fifth inning, the game was called and the score stood as follows: 1"a i .m i :tto sta t i? Batsmen R. O. The Palmettos were thus beaten in a square tight with a club of much younger age, and of much smaller men, by an pvcrw helming score. They deserve great credit, however, for the heroic manner in which they boro defeat. It is supposed that ail idea of their challenging tho Charleston and Augusta clubs has been given up and that they will await fir ther developments. The Orange boys have cause or feel ings of pride at the liappy result of this, their first match game, and our readers should Mot be surprised to hear, at no distant day, that they hud challougcd the Manhattans or the Knickerbockers, of New York. About 8 o'clock, in the evening, tlje two clubs, together with a few invited guests met at tho Engino House to pass n few hours in social chat, and to refresh themselves with a bountiful supply of tho good things of this life. Short speeches wero made and the evening passed off in a most pleasant manner. The Palmetto boys returned home on the 10:55 train, much fatigued with their nftcrpoou's exercise.
