p Many oi the Democrats as well as
Republicans in Congress are ripping
jnad at the President ot the C
United Stales because he has ?
done something that they coosid- /
er reprehensible, and this is the fi
story in briel : Several months *
ago the president sent t wo agents 2
or commissioners to the Indian ,J
Territory to investigate the sto b
ries ot coriuption and rottenness
down there among the Federal
oflicials. They went, made the
investigation and reported to the f'
president through the secretary t(
of the interior. Their report has 11
been in the hands of the president
for more than a month, and
some three weeks ago the house,
by resolution, asked the president .
for the report. At that time the c
Indian appropriation bill was j
under consideration, and the p
house wanted some information 1
^ on the report that there was rot- t
tenness in the Territory. They o
got none and the bill was passed t
by the house and then passed by H
the senate and has been signed
by the president. Now,afterthe ^
thing has become the law, the
president, sends in the report ol
his agents who investigated the
stories of corruption, and the re- (
port corroborates cyery charge i
that has been made concerning r
the Dawes Commission and the c
men who represent the irnvern- 1
mer.t in I he Indian Territory. It (
that report had been before the
house before the Indian appro- *
priaiion bill had been passed the
appropriation continuing the

would have been Knocked galley
west. The president, by holding *
that report, has continued tlie
very men in otliee who, his own
agents say, are corrupt and venal
and should be driven Irom the
ff , public service. The people may
draw their own conclusions.
The administration has got the
a daylight scared out of Wall Street '
and the big business interests o!
the country because it is going to
withdraw the money from the
banks of the country, deposited
there by the government, to pay
the opera bouffe republic of Panama
for the canal strip and the
French people for the canal.

Fish as Brain Food. I
It is often stated that fish is a
nod which ministers particularly
r> the needs of the brain because
fc contains phosphorus. As a j
natter of fact, fish does not con
ain more phosphorus than do
rdinary meat foods, and it cer- (
ainly does not contain in it the

ontains phosphorus had no doubt 1
ts origin in tlie glowing or phosihoreBcence
of fish in the dark. I
'his phosphorescence is due not
o phosphorus at all, but to micro ,
rgamsms. The belief, therefore,

CLIFTON MILLS COMPLETED
Spindles to be liiNtalled in Lost
Pacolet Mills.
The extensive and consider
able task of rebuilding three Clif
tons, whoso splendid mill prop
erties were swept away by the
waters of the raging Pacolet last
June, is about concluded. For
weeks and weeks past President

708 looms; but No. 2 has been
finished and 27,77G spindles and
801 looms placed in shape. The
first mill is already manufacturing
cotton.
Mr. Twichell has closed with
the Draper Loom company the
3ontract for putting in 1,000
spindles at mill No. 3, which
building is practically completed,

manufacturing cotton goods.
Human Flesh Still Eaten in l)il
terent Farts of the World.
There are many places in the
vorld today where cannibalism
lourishes.
|
Scattered about the Pacific I
icean are many cannibal islands
where the natives eat human
lleslt because they like it. tor
food. In others cannabalism is
practiced as a sort of religious
rite.
The natives of New Guinea are
confirmed cannibals, and not long
ago they killed and ate the mem
hers of anexploring party led the
well known missionary and explorers,
Dr. Chalmers.
Dr. Chalmers was one of the
founders of I'ort Mosebv the prin
eipal town in the British part of
the island, and has done more in
the way of exploring New Guinea
than any other man. On his
last expedition up the Fly River,
the largest in New Guinea, he was
at first received with all the old
time respect, which the natives
were wont to show him, but one
night they killed the whole party
and ate their bodies, including
that of their friend, the doctor.
Several Spanish sailors who
were wrecked near tho mouth ot
Muri River, in West Alrica, were
captured and eaten by the natives
recently.
Today there are cannibal tribes
living in many parts ol South
America. Such tribes inhabit
that region of wilderness belong
ing to Colombia known as the
Uacaqueta, and the brother ol
Gen. Rafael Reyes the special en
voy of Colombia to this country
in the Panama matter, was killed
and eaten by some of them while
attempting to cross to the head
waters of the Amazon .
