SOWING FALL OATS.
A Plan Described and Approved
by The Southern Cultivator.
The usual rotation has heeti

Buiiiciuiifs wv ? miiii ur w;ti? antJi
cotton. Its convenience doubtless
t caused it to be adopted, because
corn could bo gathered in timo to
sow down in grain and cotton
could not. There is one great defect?it
leaves the cotton lield
bare of living plants from October
to May. From the continuous cultivation
of cotton land through
the summer nitrification is greatly
developed, and at the close of the
season the soil is supplied with
8oluable nitrates, ready to be
leached by the winter rains. It
will bo seen that it is of the utmost
importance, therefore, to
cover the cotton fields as quickly
as possible after the cotton plant
dies, with some growing crop
which may take up these nitrates.
It would bo well to start said
crop in advance of the death of
1? tho cotton, and oats sown in September
meet .ill the rnnniromfliila
A
of t he case.
The great question to he determined
is how to sow the oats
u when tho cotton is still on the
land to ho sowed. We have come
to the conclusion,says The Southern
Cultivator, that sowing oats
in such a manner that they would
come up a little helow tho general
surfacfc of the land, in drills, is
the best single preventive against
cold. It shields the plants from
the cold winds and counteracts
the heaving action of freezes, by
1 :..4 4~ *1... i~:ii _

from their edges and re-cover the
exposed roots. Ilow shall oats be
drilled in standing cotton ? Just
after the cotton is picked over
run two shovel furrows in each
middle, siding the cotton as closely
as it ca?i be done without
breaking oil' limbs and bolls.
In those furrows drill the seed
through an ordinary guano horn.
The end of the horn trailing in
the furrow prevents the scatter
A ing of the seed bv the leaves and
limbs which would occur if sown
from tho hand. Follow with a
ono horse harrow and cover the
seed. In cotton rows four feet
wide such procedure would make
f the oat drills about two feet apart;
less for narrower rows. This ir
wider, perhaps, than is desirable,
i but we do not see how they e:
well bo made less, and the di
tance is not too great to prevent
j good yield. As the young oa
will at first be shaded and som
what retarded by the cotton tl
sowing should be early. The co
ton stalks should be let alone u
til the last of February. Stan*
ing. they will do some good ,
wind breaks. About the last
February knock down the stall
with sticks, then with a loi
scooter plow up the roots ai
run a roller over the field to mar
down everything which stands u
high enough to interfere with tl
cradle.
Toward the gulf oats may 1
sown so late that the cotton nui
1)0 gathered before sowing tliei

Riggest Engines in the World
The three biggest andstronge:
passenger locomotives in tl
whole world will be placed in so
vice this fall by the Souther
Railway, the largest transport;
tion system of the south, whic
taps every state south of Masc
and Dixon's line, excent Toxa
Arkansas and Louisiana. Son
idea of their strength may be gi
thered from the fact that each
fully twice sis strong as the ceh
brated "OthV which belongs I
the New YorkCentral Railway an
hauls the empire state expres
nearly three times as strong ;
the engine that hauls the Flyin
Scotchman from London to Edit
burgh and more than three tim<
as strong as the engine whic
takes the mails from London I
Holyhead. To put the matter i
another way, one of these engim
could haul as much as ten ord
nary elevated railway engines, (
four of the average passenger h
comotives used in this country.
Coupled with their extraord
nary strength these engines ha>
a remarkable capacity for hi<2
speed. One of them could pu
at the rate of sixty miles an hoi
on a nieee of lovol str.iicrlif fivir
no loss than thirty throe Pullraa
cars weighing forty tons eac!
Such a train would ho more ths
two fifths of a mile long.
The six coupled driving whee
of these engines are each six fe
in diameter,and the workingstea
pressure 200 pounds to tl
square inch. The cylinders a
of the ordinary simple type, oa<
21 inches in diameter. No loe
motives now running have
largo combined cylinder area at
steam pressure as these new <J
liaths.
You may make the movit
parts of a locomotive as powerf
as you please, but unless there
a fire box and a boiler big enou^
to match tho running gear yoi
engine will soon be short of steal
with a probable slowdown b
tween stations. This catastropl
is not likely to happon to one
these engines?as long as the co
holds out?for the tiro box is 1
feet long and 3J feet wide, wil
total heating surface of 104 squa
feet while the boiler is 5 feet
inches in diameter, with no lei
than 2,298 square feet. Soft cos
of which about eight tons wi'l 1
put on the tender at starting,wi
be the fuel.
An engine may also have grer
power and yet be unable to utiliz
ui it, owing to insuflicicnt weight on
is- tho driving wheels. The total
a weight of oneot these locomotives
ts will bo seventy-five tons of which
e- fifty-eight will rest on the six
10 driving wheels, tho remaining
t- seventeen tons being carried by
n- the four-wheel trucks in front.
