COLOREDPREACHERSCALL ON THE GOVERNOR. Aaiust Lawlessness In the Shape of Lynching? They are Advised to Preach Against the cause, Which They Say 'I hey Have ^ and Will continue to Ho. Among the callers on (Jovernor Kllerhe .yesterday was the following delegation of colored tnin isiers 01 me Florence District Conference, which at its meeting at Timinonsville, July, 25). passed resolutions condemnatory of lynching and appointed a commit tee to present the paper to the governor. The committee consisted of A. (i. Townseud, 1\ !?.; N. T. Spencer, C. 11. Hrown, Sil as Kasterling, K. I J. Horoughs, K. J. Sawyer. Their incmoriol follows. Your committee on lynching and general lawleness beg leave to report that they view with serious apprehension the growing ( disregard of law and order which is so painlully manifest through out the length and breadth of our country. In the north, oast, south and f west the orderly investigation and punishment of crimes I>y our time honored courts are too olten diplaced by heated, excited and prejudiced .judgement, and the cruel and inhuman taking of life by lawless and (iodless mobs. Your committee wish to submit that they are suprised at the failure on the part of the past administration to bring to justice the perpetrator* of these crimes of infamy upon a poor and help less people. We are alsosurpris ed at the repeated announcements made to the public through the press that the "best people" en gage in these ivnchings. This condition of all'airs is fast becoming alarming in the south; unless sonething is done, and <lono spoodilv, to re-establish flu* majesty of the law, decrease crime and stop lynching*, an era of bloodshed, carnage and devastation such as never has been witnessed under the stars and stripes of flu1* American republic will be precipitated upon us. We therefore recommend: 1. That the preachers of this district conference be required. and all other colored preachers it the state be requested, to con deinu from their pulpits any anc every violation of law, whether ii be insuli'ng a white child oi lynching a negro. That they la urged to teach l?y both precepi and example a high moral stand ard and obedience to Jaw. '2. That we extend to his Excel lencv (Jovernor Kllerbe our grate ; fill thanks for the efforts that In has made and has promised t< make to prevent lynching am punish lynchers andothir law : breakers in South < larolina. as t lit | laws of our state direct they shal I be. That we assure him. am [through him the white oitizeu oi I the state and nation, that w< I have no sympathy for those o |ottr race whocomir.it namcles< crimes upon the fair sex, ami wil do all in our power to assist ii bringing such to just, punishment Hut we insist that they should b? tried and convicted hy due pro cess of law and not made scape groats tor t lie crimes of other races ; as is too often done, when mob: i are allowed to convict and r.unisl i . : without even a form of trial. M. That we appeal to the white pulpit of the state to assist us it creating a st rong public sentiment against all forms of lawlessness especially that of mob violence which is becoming so cotnmoi and threatning in our otherwise peaceful, prosperous and beanti till country. That we appreciate the strong and tnanlv light made 1 . by the press of the of the state against mob law, believing as we do, that more can be accomplishoi through the efforts of the j res and the pulpit along this line man ny any other moans. 1. That acommilce be appoint ed by this conference to preseni a copy of this report to the gov ernor; with such additional ex planation of our position on tin subject matter of this paper, a: they may think proper; and tha the same committee be charged with the duty of publishing tin said report. Kespectfully and prayefu'.h submitted, A. <i. Townsend, K .1 Sawyer, K. .M. I'inckney, K. H Boroughs, N. T. Spencer and (J K. Brown. tiovernor Kllerbe receivei I t li#l)i i>nnrlnriiieli> J..
