Davis has been temporarily engaged
to assist in the management of the
school.
As a gentlemaniemarkled yester
day, Hayes is a prudent man. He
took the precaution of proeuring a

Schurz in it.

DELAYS ARE DANoEIOUS.-DO not
put off buying your fertilizer until
the last moment, but send in your
orders at once. Messrs. WIr.cox,
Ginns & Co. have only a limited sup
ply of their celebrated WILcox,
Gmins & Co.'s MANIPUL.r:D UAxo,
and if you delay your order you may
fail in having it filled, besides trans
plortation may be obstructed ; and
in waiting for your guano, your
farming operations will be retarded.
Recollect "time is money," so call
on their agent and obtain your sup
ply before it is too late. Their
terms are very liberal ; the guano
being delivered at interior depots
and the option given of paying in
cotton on the basis of fifteen cents
for middling, delivered next fall at
planters' nearest depot,*
TEE FAs-r ScuIEDULE.--Tho fast
schedule of the mail trains is sub)ject
to some disadvantage. The mail is
delivered and received at those sta
tions at which the train doen not
stop), by moans of mail catchers.
But a difficulty aries in case of
regis tered letters. Tholise are not
placed in the maihbag, but are trans
ferred from agent to agent, ech
giving and taking a receipt therepfor.
These letters cannot be taken in on
the fly with the mail-bags. To obs
viate the difficulty a nowv invention
has been made, for which a ' patent,
will be taken out. Without going
into details, it is sufficient to say
that the princild part of this ma
.chine consists of a grappling hook
which, on a signal from the postas
ter at any station, is lowecred out.
As the traini passes, the hook grabs
the postmaster by the seat of his
breeches and yanks him into the car
wvhere the necessary transfer is made.
After the nmail agent has gotten the
mnoney,ho dumps the p~ostmnaster out
by the same machinery. The seat of
the postmaster's pants are t6 bo
lined wvith leather, to prevent acci
dents, Young and active postmas
ters are p~referred, though after any
.one becomes expert the operation is
said to be quite exhilarating and
niot dangerous.
When Hayes shall have finally
recognized Hamptoni the decapita
fed Radical office holders will be
utilized as post'mastet' Thely hatve
been kicked so ' often that they are'
tough, and no serious dqmage watld
result if the hooks should peograte
their leathier bieces

The Building. and Loan Association.
Tho second annual meeting of the
Winnsboro-Building and Loan Asso
ciation was hold at the Town Hall
on Monday evening last. A majori
yy of the share-holders were present.
On the recommendation of the
board of directors, the by laws of
the Association were so amlended as
to constitute a majority of the stock
a quorumm, instead of a majority of
the nieubers as heretofore.
The irst business in order was
the reading of the report of the
treasurer, and of the committee ap
pointed to examiuo that officer's
books. The t:easuror's report is as
follows:

the Association has ended its'secoing

of the members Itavo have been paid
as a general thing promptly, and
thero has been no forfeiture of shares
since the last annual meeting. I
.ubmit the following balance-shleet,
showing the assets and liabilities of
the Assuciatiou since its organiza

making its par vainue $29 31.

Committee.
It will be seen that the estimate
made by the committee of the value
of ea91 share varies slightly from
that of the treasurer. This is
ac counted for by the fact tha Vlu
committee did not take into consid
eration the cash balance of $45.48.
On motion, the report of the com
mittee was disposed of in the same
manner as that of the treasurer.
The Association then went into an
election of officens fit the gear
1877-78, with the following result :
