The Super-Six principle exclu

responsible, for the largest sell

because it gives results in
smooth, brilliant action, reli
ability and economy never
attained by any other type.
This Essex, in all ways, is the
finest ever built. Easier-riding,

In view of the fact that the Vir-
giniiL Field Trial Association will run
its 1925 trials at Barnwell the week
of Nov 80th, it may be interesting to
the readers of this . paper who may
not be informed tor know the simple
irudiments of the game.
Prior to the meet, some 12 courses
1' ■;'uf ■--- — "■ j " ,,F s ^
of about a mile in length will be laid
off and “flagged" or so marked that
the handlers can keep their dogs on
the courses.
At the beginning of the meet the
name and breeding of each dog to be
run will be put in a hat and the
"drawing” will be done. That is, an
uninterested party will take two
names from the hat which will T>e
known as the 1st brace and toon two
more (2nd brace) and so on till all
dogs are drawn. These dogs will
run as they are drawn. ~
There will be two stakes, viz: The
membership stakes run for by dogs
owned by members 1 of the Club, and
Open Stakes for which all dogs are
eligible that have been nominated and
entered. There will be three cjlnsses in
Progress Report on
Boll Weevil Control
each stake: (1) The puppy class,
composed of all puppies whdlped after
Jan. I, 1925; ‘(2) The derby class,
composed of puppies whelped after
Jan. 1, 1924, and (8) All age class, as
the name signifies, composed of dogs
of any age. Of course,. only pure
bred pointers or setters are eligible
for the trials.
The terms constantly heard, Judges,
Handlers, Owners and the Gallery ex
plain themselves.
The purse to be competed for in
these trials will be $1,500.00 and
three awards' will bv made in each
class.

Having just received progress re
port oh the studies of boll weevil
control under South Carolina condi
tions, I felt that it would be of in
terest to a great many farmers to
give a short summary'of what results
were gotten in 1923 and 1924. This
i^only a summary and does not car
ry any figures which could not be
included in this short space. The
following very important results
were shown in the comparison of the
different poisons 'applied- in different
way?;
First, calcium arsenate dust ap
plied after 10 per cent, of the squares
were found to be punctured by the
weevil, made 2 0-10 times increase of
seed cotton than was made with the
Florida method; 3 1-10 times that
with one pre-square application of
jnolasses mixture, 4 9-10 times that
with two pre-sqttare applications of
molasses mixture; 1 6-10 times that
with molasses mixture applied with
both mop and sprayer; 2 2-10 times
that with the molasses mixture ap
plied with the mop throughout the
season; 2 6-10 times that with Hill’s
Mixture:
Early applications of molasses mix
ture and early applications of calci
um arsenate dust, both of which were
followed by calcium arsenate dust
after 10 per cent, infestation, made
practically the same increase of seed
cotton as calcium arsenate dust ap
plied after 10 per cent, infestation,
molases mixture, 4 9-10 times that
ses mixture, followed by calcium ar
senate dust after 10 per cent, infesta
tion, made 2 8-10 times the increase
of seed cotton that was made with
one pre-square application of ^molas
ses mixture alone.
One pre-squnrj application of cal
cium arsenate dusj, followed by cal
cium arsenate dust after 10 per cent
infestation, made 2 2-10 times the
gain -of seed cotton that was made
with one pre-square application of
calcium dust alone. —-
Molasses mixture applied with
both mop and sprayer, and nicotine
dust, made practically the same in
crease of seed cotton.
Molasses' mixture applied with
both mop and sprayer made 2 6-10
times increase of seed cotton that
was made with Dr. Bruce’s Vitamine
poison.
From the above we easily see what
the value is of calcium arsenate dust
applied after 10 per cent, of the
squares were found to be punctured.
They made a greater increase of seed
cotton from IH to 5 times as much
as the other methods of applying any
kinds of poison.1 I wish to call at
tention to the importance of the pro
per application of dust, which means
beginning when about 10 per cent, of
the squares are punctured, making
three applications at intervals of 4
to 7 days apart, then delaying any
further application only as the in
festation increases to around 10
to„ 15 per cent. Do not apply dust
during the middle of the day when
the wind' is blowing and cotton is very
dry. , The best conditions are whet)
the cotton plants are somewhat moitrt
and the atmosphere is very quiet and.
