TilE DIVORCE AND RAIL ROAI)
BI LLS.
The Divorce Law )assed in the
llouse ald made its way into the
Senate. Ifere, upon the third
reading it met its final shock, and
was defeated by a vote of 17 to 13.
Mr. Ienderson heladed the party
in support of the bill, while Messrs.
Smythe and Leitner led the others
on to victory. In order that the
measure -might not be revived
;again during the session, Mr.
Smythe moved to reconsider the
vote and table the motion-regard
ing the bill-which was carried. So
this important measure has been
acted upon.
The Rail Road bill was carried
in the louse, and no doubt the
companies feel jibilant over its
sIIcees. As it now staids
tihe companies submit their re
ports to the Conmission, which
overlooks nd corrects them and if
the companie are not pleased with
the work of the Commission, they
appeal to the Supreme Court. The
result of the Comnissioners' work
may not be a lasting one. Soon we
may look for changes, but we hope
they will not materially iijure the
interests of the people at large.
On the first page, can he seen the
opinions in part, of nearly all our
Congressmen. with reference to
the Rail Road Law.

'lThis i'ssue contains somne imipor
tant step)s taken by the legislature
recvently. All who are interestedl
n the work of the L egislature
hould1 read~ the account.
Thiere is a d'ispo)sition on1 the
p~art of some of the miembers of~
I le legislature to lessen the expen
ses incurred by the State Governi
mrent, while on the other hand it
seems to be the wish of others, to
add to the salary of the County
Auditor's oflice. We are glad to
see that the bill to increase the
County Auditor's pay was defeat
ed. If there is money to spare, let
it be alppliedl to the p)urposes most
needing it. Let it be added 0on to
t he appropriations to the Citadel
A cademy. And let the youth~of our
country enjoy the benefits of high
er education. 'The more money giv
en to these educational institutions
the more suiccessfully they will be
run : thme more enlightened and civ
i lized will our country become.
The courntry now is almost full of
good men, whn are willing 16 do
tie work of the County Auditor,
for the present salary, and why of
fer other inducements? The legis
lature should have the praise of the
people for the stand they have ta
ken in this matter.
