Wittcmberg Kynoti.—This Synod convened at Van Wert, Ohio, August the 19th. The state of religion in the churches reported good. Several new church edifices were dedicated during the year. Synod took high ground on the question of Temper- ance. The use’of tobacco was de- notfneed, and forbidden to beneficiary students. The Obiter rer says: “While the members were discuss ing the resolutions, which so frankly •nd fairly condemn the “noxious weed,” and when it was evident to all that they would pass unanimously, I saw a young brother walk to the door and cast his quid away. He not touched tobacco since, and <»y« lie never will.” The Obtereer’u informant states also that: “A letter was read before Bynod from a gentleman, who was appointed a delegate to this body by the State Conference of the Congre gational Church. The letter cou t“ined strong expressions of synipa % for our church, a grateful refer ence to the similarity of doctrine, and church polity between us, ana con eluded with a fervent request, being die unanimous desire of the Confer ence, to send a delegate from this “°dy to meet them in Convention at Oberiig next year.” NVe have always thought, that while there was some similarity be tween Lutherans and Congregation "“B* in church government, that of thirty feet they came ii|nmi an immense de|HMiit of ixinms gold, like lava iu its formation.
