Prof. M. L. Stivver, LL1>., has
been ananimously elected Professor
of the Latin Language and Litera
ture in Muhlcnlierg College. Dr.
Stover’s reputation as an able and
saccessful instructor and as a genial
gentleman, is known throughout the
entire land, ami his acceptance of
the position will give additional
strength to the rising college of our
church. .
The venerable father llcycr, al
though numbering, if we are not
mistaken, fonr-score years, has left
again for the missionary field in Hast
India. The Lutheran anti Mitutiunarg
says: “Rev. C. F. Heyer sailed from
New York last week for India, to take
charge o{, the portion of the for
eign mission field which tlie General
Synod had transferred to tlie < ’liureli
of England Society, but which trans
fer was arrested by the action of the
Pennsylvania Synod in the matter.
The venerable missionary will take
the overland route through Kurn|>e,
and expects to reach his destination
in abont six weeks. He will shortly
be followed by Revs. Schmidt and
Becker, whom the Pennsylvania
Synod will also send to the sunn*
field.”

Wittcmberg Kynoti.—This Synod
convened at Van Wert, Ohio, August
the 19th. The state of religion in
the churches reported good. Several
new church edifices were dedicated
during the year. Synod took high
ground on the question of Temper-
ance. The use’of tobacco was de-
notfneed, and forbidden to beneficiary
students. The Obiter rer says:
“While the members were discuss
ing the resolutions, which so frankly
•nd fairly condemn the “noxious
weed,” and when it was evident to
all that they would pass unanimously,
I saw a young brother walk to the
door and cast his quid away. He
not touched tobacco since, and
<»y« lie never will.”
The Obtereer’u informant states
also that: “A letter was read before
Bynod from a gentleman, who was
appointed a delegate to this body by
the State Conference of the Congre
gational Church. The letter cou
t“ined strong expressions of synipa
% for our church, a grateful refer
ence to the similarity of doctrine, and
church polity between us, ana con
eluded with a fervent request, being
die unanimous desire of the Confer
ence, to send a delegate from this
“°dy to meet them in Convention at
Oberiig next year.”

its movements. The Chronicle thinks
that if the in venter should ever start

An enterprising colored man devised

of the school-house for colored chil

signatures of certain white folks
might be serviceable, and lie applied
for and obtained a large number.
The petition commences “We, the

Mrs. Mahai.a Hkllku, consort of
Adolph Heller, of that town, in the
47th year of her age. The unobtru

extravagant eulogy should lie em

from among us; yet the claims of
love, sympathy and affection de

her exalted worth. In all the rela

Khe had never been a mother, and
yet she was tenderly beloved by a
family of children who received at
her hands tlie kindness, affection and
