*df America is expected to be with
us to-morrow, this also is a fine
fraternal order, and we wish
Brother Laser mnch success.
? A number of our Northern
friends have arrived and we are
pleased to announce that Com
modore Joseph W. Smith of An
dover, Mass. is almost daily ex
pected. The Commodore is quite
a chum of ours, and while some
what past middle age, has bis
life insured with us, and need not
expect to see that Golden shore
as long as lie keeps up his dues.
Mr. Stroud, of Kershaw, whom
we supposed was lonj? numbered
among among: the dead, we found
on last Monday, to be very much
alive. We met him on tbe corner
of th'o defunct Farmers and
Merchants Bank, and vainly
endeavored to insure him for one
year. He will probably come to
it later.
? Our good friend, Mr. L. C.
Jones, of Kershuw, was with us
on Monday, and through a tele
phone message, we learn that lie
has reached home safely. We
learn further that he was not
compelled to pass Fall Branch
on the return journey, or he
would undoubtedly have fallen
in.
? Mr. A. M. Hastings, Sup
reme District Organizer of The
National Fraternal Union is now
with us. We hope that all of
those who feel the need of
fraternal insurance will avai.
themselves of the opportunity of
secureing it in this splendid or
ganization. Mr. Hastings will
only remain with us until Satur
day. His headquarters is at our
office so there is no excuse for
anyone to fail to see him. ?
? We are glad to feay that we
have secured another lieutenant
in the person of Mr. Paul E.
Chisholm, lately of Rock Hill.
Mr. Chisholm is an all around
printer, and we feel from even a
short experience that he will be
of great assistance to us. Our
shortness in office force has here
tofore handicapped us in the
matter of soliciting job work,
but now this difficulty is obvi
ated, and we can promptly exe
cute all orders. The quality of
our work cannot be questioned,
and we. will be grateful for any
job that may be sent in, or hand

A Slight understanding.
It that we have been
slightly misunderstood in certain
remarks that we have felt im
pelled to make in the conduct of
city aliuirs, and we take this oc
casion to say that in everything
we have said in relation to pub
lic affairs, we have been actuat
ed solely by a desire to subserve
the public good. No factious
spirit has actuated us in any of
otfr remarks, and for each and
every member of those compos
ir.g the city council, we entertain
personally nothing but the kind
est of feelings.
As an editor however, we claim
thc right of criticism of what we
believe to be sins of omission as
well as those of commission.

A Sad Death. ? J
It is with peculiar feelings of
sad nejjs that we are called upon
to record the death of Mrs. A.
P. McCaskill at, Beth une on last
Friday. Mrs. McCaskill was a
wife of less than u year, a gentle I
and lovable woman, and beloved
by all who kuew her. She was!
the daughter of our old friend,
Captain- J. N. Nicholson, and to
the bereaved husband . nd sor
rowing relatives, we extend sin
cere condolence. Death some
times comes as a friend to the
aged, the helpless and afllic-ed,
but in this instance the visita
tion of the grim visitant comes
as a distinct shock to the com
munity in which the deceased re- J
sided. Combining in her pcrsou
every gift that could endeur a
woman to those with whom she
was connected, it is sad, sad that
her young life was so suddenly
cut off, but God doetli all things
well. ?

Once again we art* Hearing' the Great
Christmas festival which, in recent
years, yas assumed hiicIi vast commer
cial significance. To realize why this
is so we need only reflect upon the
beautiful spirit which characterises
both the presentation and acceptance
of love and friendship tokens on the
anniversary of Christianity's Natal
Day. Christmas stimulates trade:
much more, indeed, than any other
particular Reason of the year, but this
stimulation does not proceed from the
mere love of buying and bargaining
that is evidenced at other times. It is
the practical manifestation of one of
the sweetest longings of the human
heart. The presentation of Christina*
gift s is an outwaM..,expression of ituJ
ward goodness, a custom veritably hal
lowed by the ages. And it is not in
rlunbent upon you in selecting that
gift to purchase one so big that it re
