At a meeting of the Camden
Baptist churoli on last Sunday,
a call to the pastorate was ex
tended to Rev. ? Reeves of ? ,
Tenn. Mr. R. was with us sev
eral Sundays ago, ami tnnde the
favorable impression on the
church membership which has
resulted in the call. He is a
lucid and forcible preacher, and
we hope that he can come to us
permanently.

-Oth, iust., atid his remains were
interred at Columbia, ou yester
day. In the early days of our
rescue from real lo wag and car
petbag ruie, Mr. Thompson was
a prominent figure ir State poli
tics, and from 1882 to I8b4 filled
the office of Governor to t he gen
eral satisfaction of all the peo
ple. He was a gonial, kindly
gentlemen and we regret to

On Friday night, the 18th inst,
the soul of Mr. Thomas J. Can th
en quitted its earthly body and
tooir its flight to the bosom or
the Savior whom throughout a
very long and well-spent lile, he
had served faithfully and well.
Ho died at his home near West
ville after having been confined
to his house two years from a
stroke of paralysis which he suf
ferred about, five years ago. Ilis
end was calm and peaceful], as
well became that of a good chris
tian, a good husband and fat her,
and a good citizen. Mr. Cauth
en was in his8l)th. year at lime
of death. A wjdow and nine
children survive him.

From State newspaper 'reports
it seems that Immigration Com
missioner, Watson, is mooting '
with considerate success in turn- 1
in# the tide of immigration our
way. Let them come. We would
like very much to have a number
of the better class of them come
to Kershaw County. There are
vast areas of lands, and valuable
lauds too th it are now unculti
vated because of the scarcity of
labor, thai would, if placed in
the ri^ht -hands, be made to
blossom as the rose. Take the

example of what can be done on
what a few years ago was the
poorest kind of land.
