A STUPENDOUS FARCE.
That Um 'Primary Ejection
system Is Booth Carolina has
grown to be a stupendous bum
bug is becoming daily more man
ItMt The State Executive
Committee ot the Democratic
pkrty met on Monday night to
cousider the matter of the Walk
er-Speegle contest for the nom
ination of Supervisor of Green:
viile county, and after heaving
for several hours, brought forth
the decision that it had no juris
diction in the matter. What
travesty on justice! What..a
slain upon toe moral courage of
the majority members of that
committee! What a blow to the
primary election system! The
simple suggestion that the State
Executive Committee of the par
ty has not the right to review
and authorttively pass upon the
action of a County board has
something incongruous about it
that strikes the average Demo
crat with any degree of mtelli
genee us absurd in an extended
degree. What is a State Execu
tive Committee for? What are
their duties and responsibilities?
Do we elect them merely for the
^purpose of meeting ut Columbia
on each election year and de
claring that so and so was elected
to this or that office? No. We
send them there, and elect them
to their positions for the pur
po*e of having th'em to do justice
according to the party constitu
tion,
The point made by certain
members of the committee was
that the rules govern, and not
the constitution. What un idea!
Rules over-riding a constitution
upon whiofc tbey were framed.
Faugh! if nothing else would
disgnat ope with the primary
election system of Soutn Caro
lina this should. Think over it
people.
FIELD OP COUNTRY KKW8
FAPKlt*.
The following very excellent
trticla upon "The Field oJCoun
try Newspapers," is from the
- ?torth Dakota Slur:
< "It is generally understood
that a country newspaper is one
that is published weekly. He
who undertakes to disparage the
work of the country newspaper
must be prepured to show tluit
,, the life of a majority of the
American people is a matter of
no importance. A country edit
or who owns his plant and is
master of himself may exert a
powerful influence in the com
munity. Financial cm mrrass
ment or personal obligation to
?Some powerful patron sometimes
seriously interferes with the un
trammelled expression of a paper
'The country newspaper should
'be conducted on business prin
allies. The editor should de
mand a fair price for his ad
. yertjsjn^ space and should re
patronage of any one
who thinks ho is not getting an

? ich a grumbler that you are

, nuft nonary fund.
? not duo your rcuders

as ? i excuse (or collecting a just
debt. - Oliver Wendell Holipes,
Jn the "Autocrat,'* advisesevery
one to refrain from (nuking any
references to Illness at the morn*
ing meal lest some valettulina
ri iu be encouraged to te.l his
woes. And Emerson, the sage
of Concord, comes directly to
the point by saying that a man
never p;iys money to a creditor
who plead? poverty.
Cowardice and truculeneo are
equally roprehensible, but some
pi us would do well to keep in
jmind that good old adage about
fools whin# in where angels
/ear to tread.
Finally do not be ashamed of
your work, Take pride in it.
Lot every issue of your paper
contain something that tends to
the upbuilding of society. You
will often bis muligmyl and mis
judged, No witter, "So pro
secuted they the prophets which
were before you,"
The above extract, with the
exception of tlu> paragraph on
dunning, expresses our opinions
exactly. That paragraph we
must dissent from as, ?jnfortun
?taljr, with us, if a nowspuper

but as long as tbe present sys
tem endures, we suppose it can
not be avoided.
What under tbe sun does tbe
Democratic press of the country
want to pay so much attention
to the vagaries of Tom Watson
for? In our opinion he is sim
ply a vaguarist, a political de
generate of the first wster, and
while possessing taleut of a cer
tain kind, his insensate vagaries
should not be so seriously taken
by the press of our own political
faith us to provoke comment of
any kind on anything that he
may say.

Can you imagine such a tlnng

sort of vaudeville performance
given by a company of monkeys,
but the real article. A minia

affair, in which monkeys, and
monkeys exclusively, play all
the parts. There is a regular
stage director, a monkey man

character old woman, heavy, ju

play is that old familiar classic,
