Wore Than 5,000 Women Pledged to
a Wheatless Program Through the
Action of the South Carolina Federation
of Wome t's Clubs.?Will Have
Far-Reaching Effect.
More than 5,000 c!n"b women of
firmth Carolina are pledged to a wheat
less program by the action of f .>
South Carolina Federation of Worn ex. s
Clubs, who in convention at Aiken on
April 2G unanimously adopted a resolution
to buy no more wheat hour until
after the next harvest.
This action was taken upon the request
of William Elliott, food administrator
for South Carolina, who wired
the club women in session at Aiken
' *
of the urgent necessity of saving
wheat in order that America may carry
out the abligation to the Allies.
Governor Manning, who addressed
the club women on Thursday nigh:,
urged that Mr. Elliott's request be acted
upon.
There are upwards of 123 federated

of their I - zn imhership going on

Essential that South Carolina Farmers

Columbia.?Cotton is v.o longer the
one money crop in South Carolina. In
the present situation, created by the
world war. with a hungry world to be
fed, the Food Administration calls
upon .the farmers of South Carolina to
increase their acreage planted in corn
this year.
Men who watch the world situation
closely are of the opinion that the
price of corn, higher than fcr many
yQp.rs. will retain its high level. It
seems that it would be impossible for
the price of corn to decline, even with
a considerably Ifr^er production this
year. The worlu cry is for ?nod. Food
frs Via Iati*."" is r- rf

there is no reason why corn sh u"1 be
an exception to the r-de. A- a ma or
of fact, corn becomes a moo- y crop,
or may be so corridered. Prospects
are even for higher p-:^es for rcn.
The ~"orld situation seems to give too
price of corn a certain stco'lity. OnN
the other hand, cotton prices are more
or less uncertain ?.::d speculative. as
was shown by the recent decline.
These are advanced as s^mo ~c the
business reasons for inua^n *?ng the
acreage planted in corn this year.
With a war to win. and considering
America's obligation to feed hi? Allied
countries, the strictly burio reasons
must be regarded as sur >" w *el to
the primary reason?ih? ' " ' * oeoessity,
as a matter of ra ' m. as a
