GOOD FOR WELLS AND GARY, j Solicitor and Judje Teaching- Respect For the Law. 'oliitnhiii Stnlc. W. II. Brigman, "a well-to-do j and extensive farmer of Marion," j severely beat in old white woman who was working for him. Brig- j man, as we are told by our Ma- j rion correspondent, had beeu in [ numerous shooting aud fighting affrays, but heretofore has escaped prosecution. With money j lie could buy immunity. The latest caso was iu tended to be no exception; Brigham succeeded in getting the old woman to drop the case. ProseoutorS' are bought off in almost every county every year. But in th;.3 Marion caso Solicitor Wells interfered. Solicitors are far too j prone to accopt the failure of an j injured person to prosecute as I an excuse for "dropping" cases against law-breakers. M r. Wells did not evade his dsty; he handed out an indictment sgainst Brigman and the grand jury returned a true bill. And then Brigman, expecting lo escape with a tine, pleaded guilty. But he miscalculated. Judge Ernest Gary on the bencb sentenced the brute to eighteen months' hard labor on the chaingang. Ho was not given the alternative of a fine; his money failed to make a monkey out of the law aad the court. Solicitor Wells andl Judge Gary have done Marion county and South Carolina good service. WHY BRIGMAN BEAT THE WOMAN. Marion special to News and Courier. A short time ago Brigman's house, aear Marian, was destroyed by Ire, and he accused an old woman, who was acting in the capacity of cook, of having been guilty of carelessness in regard to the fire in the cook stove, and of being the cause of his loss. In the presence of witnesses he whipped her unmercifully, while she cried out with pain, loudly proclaiming her innocence. The grand jury found a true bill in this case, and on his having pleaded guilty Judge Gary promptly pronounced sentence of eighteen mouths pn the gang at hard labor. Only about a year ago Brigman bought the Evans plantation, uear hear, fsr ?17,000, and his imprisonment makes the situation a very serious one for him. -+-* Lifo Preservers.
