Mr. and Mrs. Williard Bates and Charlotte of Laurens were Saturday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Bates. On Christmas Day, the latter couple were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Bates in War- renville. Surprise Birthday Party Mrs. Effie Cannon was hon ored with a surprise birthday party on the evening of her birthday, Dec. 24, at her home. Her sister, Mrs. Josie Boyce, had decorated a large box, with white gift wrapping paper with “Happy Birthday” put on it using yellow rib bon, in which the honoree’s many nice gifts were placed. A number of relatives and friends, old and young, en joyed the occasion with Mrs. Cannon. The youngest being her great - grandson, Barry Fuller of Clintofo. Considered special guests were her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Hogan of Holly Hill, Fla., who were her for the Christmas holidays. Mr. and Mrs. John Finley of Waukegan, 111., where Mr. Finley is stationed visited Mr. and Mrs. James Mitchell in Joanna, and Mrs. Mattie Gil- nier, and Mrs. Henry Law- son in Clinton during the hol idays. Returns From Germany Major pnd Mrs. Melvin Franzen and children just re turned from Germany where they have been for a year and are enjoying the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Franzen.
