M. “Jim” Eleazer, writer of the farm column, “Farms and Folks,” published weekly in The Chronicle, has retired. Mr. Eleazer also wrote another column, “Seen Along, the Road side,” published by many papers, and was the author of two books, “A Dutch Farm Boy,” and “Our Land Is Our Life,” a book on con servation. Mr. Eleazer, who majored in agronomy at Clemson, was not professionally trained as a writer but has become noted through his columns as one of the most widely read editors in the agri cultural field. He started writing a farm column while serving as county agent in Saluda county in 1918. “I found my column to be very helpful in advancing ideas which 1 hoped would aid in improving agriculture. “I am grateful that the news papers saw fit to print them,” he added. The American Association of X Agrclultural College Editors twice selected Mr. Eleazer’* col umn g* tops In the nation. In 1957, he was selected by “The Progressive Fanner” magazine for the award of Man of the Year in South Carolina Agriculture. The retirement is in accord ance with the Clemson College policy of retiring personnel at the !t of 65. He will retain an office th the Agricultural ^Informa tion Service at Clemson. In his columns, Mr. Eleazer In terlaced new farm ideas with vivid descriptions of earlier farm life In the Dutch Fork section of Lexnigton County shortly after the turn of the century. He described his father as a country doctor who kept two horses. ^ _ ‘Brother and I farmed with the one he wasn’t driving” he says. He has worked for the Clemson College Extension Service since 1917, having served in Jasper, Saluda, and Sumter counties.
