Nicklee Buys Irrigation System
Dr. M. B. Nickles, Laurens, has
bought an irrigation system and
tested it out just before the rain a
few days ago.
The system is what is known as
low presure system, requiring ap
proximately 60 pounds of pressure
at the pump and 35 pounds of press-:
ure at the end of 1900 feet of pipe.
The sprinklers attached along
the pipe will cover an area at one
setting of approximately five acres,
delivering approximately one inch
of water per acre on the five acres
in about three and one-half hours
of operation.
The pump delivers approximate-.
lv 39,600 gallons per hour of opera
tion. It requires approximately 28.-:
000 gallons of water to put one inch
of water on an acre of land. One big
factor in irrigation is the supply of
water. ;
Dr. Nickles owns a farm in the
Lisbon community, producing beef,
cattle of the Hereford breed Dr. (
Nickles is hopeful that this ques-j
tion of dry weather is solved for the
future, in so far as growing grass
for his cattle.
Velemarian From Turkey
Visit* County
Miss Gursel, a graduate in veter-j
inarian from Turkey, was a visitor
to Laurens county on December 10
to study the Laurens Cooperative
Artificial Breeding program in op
eration here in the county. Dr. Vic-j
tor Hurst, Associate Dairy’ Hus
bandman, Clem son College, accom -,
pamed Dr. Gursel on the inspection
trip. Dr. Gursel will spend several
months in the United States, study-j
ing livestock programs before re
turning to her native country. She
was an interesting person to talk
with, and we feel honored in bav-’
ing Laurens •eunty selected to vis-
it. .
While here in the county. James
Adair. Technician for the Artificial
Breeding Association, showed the
visitors through the laboratory and-
discussed the program in general,
ion James Adair took training for
Dr. Hurst, under whose supervis
technician work at Clemson Col
lege. spoke highly of Mr Adair’s
work, and also of Jamt-s Jacks,
Asst. Technician, who took training
at the same time Mr. Adair had his
training. .
The iadv from Turkey thought
it was very fortunate for livestock
producers of Laurens county to
have an opportunity to use the
breeding program offered them.;
The bulls used in Clemson College
Dairv herd are the same ones
in the breed mg'prog ram carried ooj
in this county.
A technician is on duty seven
days each week to meet calls for
the association. No one will be on
duty however on December 25,
which is Christmas Day The breed
ing fee has been reduced to seven}
dollars Both dairy and beef type
bulls are used in the breeding pro-i
gram by the association.
Control Turnip Loaf Spot
By Rotation
Farmers and merchants complain
about leaf spots on turnips. This
leaf spot has caused a ragged ap
pearance of turnip greens and in
many instances has rendered the;
greens unsalble. The disease dam
age is more serious on unroUted
land. Market gardeners and others
will do well to rotate turnig green
patches. A certain amount of evi
dence indicates that sprays or dusts
will be helpful, but main reliance
should be on rotation.
Now Vegetable Garden Circular
Clemson College Extension Serv
ice has published a new circular
No. 389 tilted, “Home Garden In-1
formation for Piedmont South Car
olina,” that deals only with garden-,
ing in this area, and is free at the|
County Agents’ office to any per
son calling for same.
The circular deals with the rec
ommended varieties of vegetables,
time of year to plant seed or set
plants, amount of seed to sow ih
100 feet of row and space of rows,
and distance in drill. Also informa
tion in control of diseases and in
sects.
Root-knot is a problem to many
gardeners, but can be controlled
rather satisfactorily by the use <Jf
Chemicals.
The root-knot nematodes (small
worms) enters the roots of plants
and remains in one place in roots
for its entire life. This injury cause
galls or knots to form. These kind
of knots should not be confused
with legume nodules which are!
caused by beneficial nitrogen-fixirfg
bacteria.
Root-knot is found on tomato,
okra, coHard and cabbage roots,
and many other plants. The plants
affected with root-knot are first
noticed as lack of vigor in its
growth. In many cases, the affected
plants wilt, followed by defoliation
and in severe cases dying of the
plants occur.
There is a material known as DD
or Ethylee Dibromide that is ap- ufacturer should be followed for Nematodes,’’ gives detailed inform-
phed to the soil as a liquid that j best results. I at ion on the control of root-knot
kills the small worm through fum-| Extension Circular No. 382 titled, The~pamphlet may be had free at
