DOCTOR SHORT
Penney Execntfve Addressed Chamber

“Community Building.”
The feature of the regular March
meeting of the Chamber of Com
merce held last night, was an inter
esting talk by Dr. F. B. Short of New
York, vice president of the J. C.'Pen
ney Foundation and director of pub
lic relations of the J. C. Penney com
pany, who spoke on “Community
Building.” His address was immense
ly enjoyed by the members and invit
ed guests and he was giveU a-rising
vote of thanks for his constructive
message. *
Dr. Short spoke on “Community
Building” and emphasized that the
community structure must be for all
and not for a selected few. He elab
orated on his topic in a most forceful
and entertaining manner, and expresh,^
ed his pleasure on being in Clinton and^
as pleased with all he had seen and
heard about the city sinc^ arriving
here yesthrday afternoon from Colum
bia where he addressed the Kiwanis
club. From he're he goes tpday to
Greenwood and Anderson before re
turning to New York.
“The building of a community,”
said Dr. Short, “is somewhat like
building a home of your own. You
prize it for what you make out of it,
and for what others in your family
help to contribute toward it. You want
your honfe to be a happy home, whq^e
you and your family are happy, and
where the thought for others takes
precedence over self. So it is with a
community. Democracy is the key-note
in community building. There must be
the thought of our community, rather
than my community. You must say.
We will have what we want, not what
I want.’
“The three greatest factors in the
building of a community,” continued
the speaker, “are the home, the school
and the church.” He then explained
the i'^portant place of each in the
community.
Befche closing his address. Dr.
Short spoke on the need of every com
munity for good roads, good hotels
and good hospitality. Politics and re
ligion should not shape a community,
he insisted, and explained that al
though there had to be these elements
in the community, these should not be
so warped as to strangle the democ
racy of the people. He also advised
every community to bring industries
into their midst, where the laboring

J. W. and J. H. BrO'Wn, brothers,
residents on Ferguson street and em

were caught Tuesday night shortly af
ter nine o’clock-as'they^ were entering
the Bee Hive store. They had broken
a window glass in the back door and
had partly gained their entrance into
the building when they were discov

lan, Bagwell and Young of the city
police force.
Following the arrest of the Browns,
a search was made- early yesterday
morning of their house where prop
erty belonging to the Academy Street
school building was discovered. The
same pair had broken ipto this build
ing Sunday night and stolen victrola
records, rugs, sweaters, mirrors and
various other items, besides breaking
the locks on the teachers’ cabinets in
every room in the building, evidently
in search of money. Neither denied
their guilt in the school robbery and
manifested care-free, indifferent atti
tudes on btoh charges when seized and
searched by the officers. Both were
lodged in the county jail yesterday to
await trial at the approaching term of
criminal couat.

EYESIGHT
I
Eyes of Today
* Seventy people out of every one hundred have
defective ^esight. And this is ttol because eyes
are being made “poorer” than they were in
grandfather’s day either. '
Our present mode of living, with confining
work, insufficient exercise and'too many hours
spent with artificial lights throws a load on the '
eyes which they were never intended to carry.
As a result, more and more people need the
comforting help of glasses for eyes which have
been overworked.
Do not put off giving your eyes the attention
they deserve. It is more than likely they need
it NOW.
