We all try to be "ehairful" but please don't be too long. Oh what if somebody wanted to get married this by a true true preacher. All the ministers are enjoyed life under vine and fig trees of other climes. Doctor Joe Cabell Davis wears quite a ministerial air-as well as our other notary republics-aud sits near the depot watching for "them North Car'lina trains "All aboard for the South bound train" Dr' B. M. Badger has written a strong article or. the subject of pallagra. There still seems to be some doubt in thi minds of some \ i as to the cause of this disease, judging fiom an article in the State qn August 14, from Durham, N. C., relative to four deaths from Pallagra in that neighborhood. The Herald would appreciate articles from other gifted writers on this all absorbing topic of the day. The Confederate Fund is nearly complete South Carolinians should show their appreciatiod of the undaunted valor of "Our Women In The War" bv sending in their subscriptions at once to "The State" office Then when thatshaft symbolical of all that is unble and have is erected Citizens of Dillon. Why not please on one of our beautiful thoroughfares, a monument to the brave old veterans of Marion County. T ? in years to come wnen \v?r remains, but a memory in the hearts of the dessendants of these who participated in the horrors of 1861-65 the little children about the streets will point with pride to "Our monument." The City Beautiful. The idea of a ' City Beautiful" has spread rapidly throughout the country until every progressive city, town and hamlet has a League or some such organization working to make this land of ours a more attractive and healthy place in which to live. The results of such a movement can not be estimated, but when we see or read of the wonderful transformations that have taken place throuch the inflti#?no<? r\f such organizations, none can deny their great power for good where ever they exist. It was with the hope of helping to make Dillon a City Beautiful that The Dillon Civic Improvement League was organized just a year ago. This is by no means a small undertaking, and the greatest good can only be accomplished by the hearty cooperation of every L citizen of Dillon as veil as the work of each Individual member of the League. We are glad indeed to say that our very efficient K Mayor and Town Council have always been willing to help us r carry out our plans and with I Chair aid and encouragement we JT" <t.{-.-V .-'-jiU T?.'" ? |J h<i <: > iiucb n.->' ''her I League has n-centlv placed neat} ' I covered cans along the business Streets in which to put all waste ( papers and other trash. We hope to have the well bo:ed right away and The Town Counci' has kindly offered to ce- 1 ment around it, build a shelter ' or do anything necessary to the appearance or general utility of ; the well. The following are a few selected suggestions in regard to Civic imDrovement which will be of interest to all who are interested in making Dillon the "City Beautiful". Exercise the same supervision over your side walk as over your front yard- Side walks are an index of the kind of people inside. A few dimes and a lot of enthusiasm and determination will transform an unsightly yard into a spot of beauty. Whitewash every thing you cannot paint. Encourage your children to help the good work along bv training them to pick up papers sticks and other rubbish where ever tound- Call the attention of all whom you meet to the idea of a "City Beautiful." Talk yonr neighbor into the scheme and lets fix up the old town. You are a link in the chain of Civic progress. Do not be a bad link and break the chain. People who live in a beautilul, improved city are healthier, happier and wealthier than those who live in a mud hole. Jennie McCutcheon Cottingham. ( Pre . Dillon Civic Improvement J League. Mr. Frank Watkins, whose abili- 1 ty as a chicken raiser and garden er is widely known, is greatly dis- " tressed in the loss of one hundred and fifty fine chickens in three weeks, from the disease known as limber neck. Mr. Watkins was interviewd by a Herald reporter Tuesday morning, and he asks 1 that we make a request through 1 the columns of this issue of the Herald that some person, ac- j quainted with this disease, and i its cause, will give information * as to the cure for limber neck. ] Any information on the stihieot . will be highly appreciated by i Mr. Watkins. J "The State" is publishing a 1 series of articles from the gifted pen of Mr. A. S. Sally Jr, on { South Carolina Genealogies. Mr. Sally is gifted, his mind is a ver- < itable history in itself, and we believe that the little snap in which he was caught about Emily Geiger "only added one more laurel to his crown o f fame. Alex is no "slow coach." If one could chance to pass his lonely home on Laurens Street would see that with half an eye. But he does love the City by the Sea." FALL FLORAL SHOW. Ladies of Civic Society Urge CiiywtiM.?The Mm Offered. The ladies of the Civic Society wish to remind the ladies of this section that if they are going to ; take part in the fall floral show, and they hope that all will take part, they ought to begin to work to that end. The ladies will ask ' " T?r mm*mm mi the flower growers, of Manuu, Darlington, Timmonsville, Kingstree, Dillon and all the surrounding towns and cities to enter mtc the competion. Florence Times. - In Mcmortum. Sacred to the memory of Josit Stubbs, aged five years and foui months who passed away to the home of our Heavenly Father the night of Tuesday August 10 This dear little child endearec herself to all with whom she same in contact* Her short life was spent in doing sweet little acts of kindness to her playmates parents, sisters, ancl brothers The little recitations formed hese childish lips were charm tig, and those who heard the weet childish voice that added sc nuch to the play, "The Unior Station" in the little prayer whicl he uttered that came so nat irally from her sweet lips, wil lever forget it. May it be th< will of our Father to lead us ii :he same pathway, and bring ui all to that Eternal Home. Mr. Dan W. Ham mack, apromi nent citizen of Randolph countj and a member of the board o commiesicners of roads and reve nues has the right idea of th< gvuu iuiius movement. in tn? Cuthbert Leader recently he hac the following to say concerninj the matter: "The board has none of thi fever of making automobile high ways. We have no objection t< their traveling on our good road: when they can be so termed, bui the main thing we want is to bt able to carry double the quantity in loads with less strain on teams It is the hog, hominy and cottor man that we want first to provid< for?the man that carries some thing to and from market. Ou: auto friends seldom get beyond ? coca-cola or cigar purchase."
