9 Times are hard but a merchant

Not so very long ago a man
representing a printing house in
another state was in Dillon soliciting
orders for commercial printing.
He offered a local merchant
a note head for $1.50 per 1000
which cost at the factory $1.15
with every discount off. Add
$ 1.35 for typesetting, padding
and press work and you will see
the solicitor was the loser to the amount
of $ 1.00. The price was
attractive and the merchant
bought. Then the solicitor
showed samples of other kinds of
commercial stationery. The
samples included order books, remittance
blanks, etc. The merchant
bought a lot of these also.
y and has moved the cotton

s moved into the David build?

purchased from Mr. Ha r.
The District Lodge Knights of,
thias has accepted an iuvitation

lion next fall. The invitation
is tendered through Messrs. H.
Cottingham, R. M. Lang and
M, Moody who attended the
itrict meeting at Florence last
:ek as delegates from the Dillon
lge.
Last Thursday a week ago,
irty- six years ago, this country
is visited by a frost followed by
exceptionally cold snap that
lied all vegetation. The few
:eks previous to the frost had
en very mild and there was a
ku riant giowth of vegetation
erywhere. The incident is relied
by many of the older inhab.nts.
Not for many years has the
ring season been so favorable
r planting and the result is that
tton planting is well advanced,
. ports received from different
rts of the county seem to indite
that the usual acreage will be
anted this year. However,
ere has been a big increase in
e tobacco acreage.
Mr. G. C. Johnson has received
tters patent on a suspensory
hich may prove of great practi1
value to the medical profesjn.
The suspensory was in nted
by Mr. Johnson's brother-law
in Germany who is a phy;ian
and the invention is coved
bv patent in the German Emre.
Mr. Johnson is making prerations
to put the patent on the
arket.
Mr. P. W. Bctbea, superintennt
of the public school of St.
corge, and Miss Eva Weathers
that town were married on Friiy
morning. Immediately after

the happy couple left for
Uta where they spent several
iys visiting Mr. Bethea's relates.
Miss Weathers is said to

and the goods checked with the
bill alright. But then another
printing man came along and the
merchant laughed at his quotation
of $ 2.50 per 1000 for the same
note head. The bill was produced
and fully sustained the merchant's
claim that he could buy the same
note head for $ 1.50 per 1000, but
lc and behold! lie had paid
double price for every other item
on the bill and was the loser to the
extent of a $10 spot. But still
such things happen every day.
NOTICE TO ItOAD OVERSEERS.
All ovei seers ol the public roads
in the County, whether newly appointed
or holding over under former
warrants, are directed and
urged to give immediate attention
to,their respective sections, with
especial reference to such portions
of the highway as have been plowed
into by cultivators of adjacent
lands. The practice of plowing
into and trespassing upon the public
roads in many quarters has
grown into an evil and a nuisance
that must at once be abated.
Persons liable to road duty, whc
have not paid the commutation
tax, must be required forthwith
to perform enough labor to put
their sections of roads in good con
dition. The prompt and vigorous
attention of the overseers is urgently
requested.
