1-1 ;I CONTAINER FOU ' SWEET POTATOES ggcjf . * Clemson College, December 22.? i Just now a great deal is being said ^ with reference to the kind of containers best suited for ttse in storing and shipping sweet potatoes, says F. I* Harkey, Agent in Marketing. At the present the dealers prefer the hamper, but a great many growers and storage house people are using the * -j. n V?++oi? CTlif Prl crate oecauae ju sevuu ?? for use in carrying the crop from the field to the house and as a storage container. The container question is not definitely settled as yet. Each agent "in marketing has been furnished with a list of container manufacturers in his state. County agents and growers should communicate with the state agent. Sweet potatoes are shipped to market in barrels, crates, hampers, round 'Stave baskets, and in bulk. Without question the type of shipping container that is nsed has appreciable influence in sectoring fopnotch prices for the grower. Containers must carry well, ventilate properly, and present a anwirondtn Q+rAn p- nackacres OpyVMAMMW* x - of such construction as to secure proper ventilation cut down railroad claims to a minimum, and attractive containers aid in the sale of the contents. Fewer styles of containers and better containers are an advantage alike to grower, shipper, carrier and public. Too many sizes, with variation in size barely distinguishable to the eye, lead to misunderstandings i R. J. Reynol \jTOXJ certainly get youi I call for a tidy red tin or makin's cigarette! In thirteen states the legal weight of a bushel is 50 pounds, and in six states 55 pounds, consequently ?? " .-1-^4-^ . The United States DepartI ment of Agriculture recognizes the [volume of 2150.42 cubic inches and its multiples and sub-divisions. Due | to this variation in legal weight per bushel, as well as to variations in size, ! hit is neither feasible nor desirable to j attempt to standardize a weight j bushel, that is, a container holding a j bushel of sweet potatoes by weight, j The./cost of a container is a contributing factor to its successful in- j troduction. Cost, however, should j never be sacrificed if it results in the manufacture of a weak or frail package that will not carry- to market. When prices are high a small container can be used to advantage, when low, a relatively larger package. The United States Bureau of Markets favors the use of containers for sweet potatoes holding either one bushel or one and a half bushels standard dry measure, with the elimination of all intervening sizes. The ' bushel crate, hamper and round basket are already in commun use. The first has an orange box head and 17 : inch slats. The hamper and round bushel are objected to by the railroads, the claim being that they do not load or carry well.
