t WATCH STORAGE BATTERY | IN EXCESSIVE NIGHT DRIVING l>uring hot weather a great many motorists do considerable driving m ^ thf evening. In fact, in the cases o! ?& many automobiles used for pleasure V purposes only, most of the driving at W this time of vear is done after dark. How an excess of night driving ar| fects the storage battery is explain ;1 by Mr. Whit'.ock of the local Presto-CfLite Battery Service Station. "4A great deal has been said about keeping tha storage battery always full charged," says Mr. Whitlock. "but the point is so important chat It can not be too strongly emphasizes. "One of the conditions that, if continued, will slowly discharge a battery, if it is not watched, is excessive night driving. This is because the lights, together with the starter, con fiume more current than is returned to the battery by the generator. x "For instance we will take the motorist who uses his automobile during I the day only to drive down to his office and back. He makes little milef.g'i and consequently his generator ^ charges his battery but very little. B After dinner he starts out on a long ^ evening drive. If he drives out a distanc? he uses his headlights fully turned on and a spotlight. Before ne gets back he will have driven four or five times'ds far as he drove during the day. ''All during the drive he uses some of the reserve power of the battery for the reason that the lights and starter consume current faster than 'the generator charges the battery? jjfj^^whieh means that the storage bat. |f probably jS not as fully charged wmn % - - ?a i? -x i- J Tl w A# returns as wnen ne sianeu. j\ P the automobile is driven very much the next day, the discrepancy is made up but if not. the battery's energy is reduced. "Repeated drams of this sort will cause the battery to finally Decoms discharged if it is not watched ana total discharges should be avoided. Tnoia clt/viiTA V\o mo^o rapTl!axlV 1 CCbO vJUVUiU MV AUMUV * VQ every ten days, with a hydrometer and if the gravity test gets as low as 1.225 the battery should receive a freshening charge at once." "This care is very essential to the efficiency and life of any storage battery. Running on a battery that has _ .been allowed to near discharge may be likened to running1 on a very soft r tire. Either practice results in unnecessary expense. "Motorists who are not inclined to make these necessary tests may call as often as they desire for our testing seroive af East Main.
